Seeing that radial engine on the B25 really takes me back! I was an engine mechanic from 55 through 58 on the KB29 arieal tanker which had an 18 cylinder Pratt&Whitney radial engine with 3350 cubic inches displacement. Later the KB 50 arieal tanker which had a 28 cylinder Pratt&Whitney engine of 4360 cubic inches displacement. (Do you know how many spark plugs are in a 28 cylinder engine???!!!)56! The B25 had I think a 7 cylinder engine of about 1800 or 2200 cubic inches. It could have been a 9 cylinder though. The radial is never an even number of cylinders on a given bank of cylinders.

The B25s were what Billy Mithcell and his brave men rode as far as they could go when they were the first to bomb Tokeyo Japan.

Sad thing is there is only ONE B-29 still flying. Her name is Fifi, and she is shown at airshows all over. They take real good care of her. Bob in NY

Yea, Zane, my heart started goin' pitty-pat see'n those radial engines too. I flew Lockheed Connies which had Wright 3350's on um...I think we had 36 sparkies. times 4 engines equalls 144 sparkies.

I guess those 3350s were Curtis Wrights instead of Pratt& Whitneys.

I was stationed at McConnel AFB in Sacremento Cal. for a few months in summer and fall of 58 when the Red Chinese were shelling Quemoy islands (Tiawan) and we were ferrying fighters to the islands in antisipation of doing battle with the Chinese. Their was a lot of Super Connestalations coming and going from there as it was also a civiliam air field too. They seemed to have a lot if the Connies coming in with one or more engines feathered or smoking etc. Seemed to me that they had more problems with them than we did on the KB 29s ????? They also had a lot of C 47s and C 46s coming and going there as it was I think the home of the flying tiger air lines. Also lots of C54s which were four engined.

Being a mechanic on the big radials meant a lot of spark plug changing duty!

Believe that might be an English 9n Ford. Believe I see a Spitfire there too.

Jerry, the more that I look at the picture, the more I think that you are right. I thought that P-51's had 4 blade props, though.

Actually, It's a B-25 Mitchell, not a B-24. You can see the others in the background. Sorry for being so anal-retentive. By the way, is anal-retentive hyphenated? (grin).

I saw the twin stabilizers and jumped the gun. Didn't look close enough. Hyphenation is optional. 8^) Steve 8N 169302

It definitely looks like a 9 or 2N. I don't think it is a moto tug since they didn't have a front mounted hitch. However there seems to be some sort of under mount carriage that blocks the front wheels and a portion of the forward side of the rears.

In my opinion, it's a 9N!
Could be 2N, but the only difference was that the 2N had steel wheels, a magneto and possible a few other minor changes.

Pat,
Don't forget, it is being used on military aircraft. Thusly, being military, it will have rubber tires, and could also have a generator and distributor and lights. It could still be a 2N. Just set up differently for the military...They did not get their equipment set up for farming and steel wheels do not work very well on concrete ramps towing aircraft. Also, this could also be a model purchased before the BNO's were brought on line as a stopgap till orders for regular tugs were filled..Remember, they needed a lot of equipment in a hurry!
Just pondering
