8N ENGINE CONDITION

I just removed the oil pan plug to do a routine oil change and have found several pieces of metal lying in the bottom of the plug. The engine has been running fine with "good" oil pressure, from what I've read. Just bushogged 2 acres around two weeks ago with no problems. I havent done a compression check yet, or pulled the pan off. Should I go ahead and pull the pan to look around, or wait till something breaks for sure? I'm almost scared to start it now !
Any suggestions or comments welcomed !

Brad..... ...don't know or can't tell from your description "found several pieces of metal lying in the bottom of the plug".

Are pieces are fine like hair, or big 'nuff to save for chilli. How brave do you feel? If'n they kinda look like sheetmetal, probably one of the piston rod lock nuts.

While it is always good practice to keep track of your compression and I endorse your plan, I kinda doubt your stray metal bits will have any relationship.

Bottom line, I see you learning how to remove the front axle and how to split the tractor at the tranny so you can drop the heavy castiron oil pan so you can "inspect" for metal sources.

Hope you have an I&T FO-4 manual, $29 cheep. Makes everything so much eazier..... .....Dell, who also suggests while you have the tractor split, replace the tranny front seal $3 cheep and inspect the clutch stuff.

Brad, Try to identify the pieces. Are they aluminum, cast iron, thin sheet metal, or what? How big are they? Is the "round upside down can" that the drain plug screen fits into tight? Sure the pieces arn't magnets that someone put on the drain plug? Get back with a discription; someone will recognize what ya got. Can ya post a picture?

I should have been more descriptive on the metal pieces. They are more like "chunks" than shavings, I think aluminum. One shaped like a triangle, 1 inch long bottom and approx 3/4 long sides. I can start to see a rounded area on one. In looking at my master parts catalog and I&t fo-4 manual, it could be a crankshaft cap.
So if I go into the motor like this, should I go ahead with a complete overhaul?

Brad, lets see, aluminum in the pan of an N. Not a bearing cap. They are steel. If it were a bearing cap I can almost guarantee you would hear the noise. How about the leftovers from someone replacing an aluminum timing gear? Could be piece of a piston skirt but would think you would hear a noise with this. There is a piece of aluminum in the rear of the block that holds the main seal but don't remember it being having these dimensions. Questions: Have you verified it is aluminum? Magnet test! Were these chunks inside the oil inlet screen or floating in the pan? What is the third dimension of the piece you discribed. How many pieces? If it is aluminum casting I would be leaning toward the timing gear.
