New 8N / Service Questions

Hello,

Yesterday I became the latest owner of an 8N. I looked for quite a long time and am pretty happy with this one. I have a couple of questions while I am waiting for my manuals to arrive. The dipstick on the RH side near the rear diff appears to be for the hyraulics. How is this filled and where? The stick reads to check it with cyls extended, that means with the 3pt up, right? What fluid type is used here? I can only find what appears to be a cap near the shifter and would assume gear oil is used there. Is the hyd fliud seperate?

Sorry for the rookie questions, haven't owned a tractor this old before.

That part about the cylinders extended doesn't you don't have to worry about unless you have a loader etc on the lift system. The small amount that the 3 point hitch ram cylinder is but a drop in the ocean and I promise you it won't be noticed on the dip stick no matter where the 3 point hitch cylinder is positioned.

Main thing is five gallons if all 3 drains have been opened and if in cold climate use 134. If in hot climate use 80/90 W gear oil.

Don't worry too much about the quality of the 80/90 W gear oil you use as long as it is new and clean if you happen to change it. When these tractors were designed the only man who had ever even thought of going to the moon was the one put there for burning trash on Sunday! :O)

Arne..... ....what Pitch sez..... ..and you might want to search the "archives" at the top of this great N-Board.

Yeah, cylinder extended, means hydraulic 3-point up. Remember, its hydropower up and gravity down and PTO must be turning to run the pump.

Ford/New Holland now recommends 5 gals of spec M2C-134D hydro/tranny oil. 'course ya can use what was recommended 60 yrs ago if'n ya can find 90wt mineral oil (not differential gear oil). 1 fill up by tranny shifter, 3 drains, drain small differential plug first 'cuz it'll pee innna bucket pretty good, then drain the big 2" hydraulic plug, then the big tranny plug. (you might be prepaired to replace with new tranny plug gaskets 50c cheep) Never hurts to replace any and all fluids on a new to you vehicle.

Recommend you get an I&T FO-4 manual. Readily available at most sponsors of this great N-Board, most tractor parts emporiums, Borders Books, Amazon.com, www.n-news.com (great archives of implement manuals), even Ford/New Holland fer peets stakes, $29 cheep, gettcha 1 and readitt..... ....Dell

Welcome to the world of N's. Careful, they can become very addictive! Do a quick search of the Archives on 134D (search box at the top of the page). You will find information/debates/arguments/options for the newer specs vs. the older specs of hydraulic oils. There are 3 drain plugs under the tractor, and 1 fill plug near the gearshift. Use a large funnel when you try to refill it if you purchase a 5 gallon pail (don't ask how I learned this...). The transmission and the hydraulics all operate on the same fluid.

There is no way to know what the last owner had/has in there for fluid, or how long it has been since the last change, so I recommend changing it anyway.

Old specs were for straight 90 weight mineral oil and the new specs are for Ford/New Holland M2C134D Hy/Trans fluid.

If you have leaks and/or the hydrualics bleed down quickly when raised and the engine is shut off with implement attached, and/or this will be primarily a warm weather rig, go with the straight 90 weight.

If you do not have leaky wheel seals, PTO seal, etc., and the lift seems solid and/or the rig will be used in cold (below freezing) weather, then go with the new recommended M2C134D or equivalent.

Three drain plugs for the Hy/Trans back to front...Start at the back...

Your Money...Your Tractor...Your Choice...

Tranny diffrential and hydraulics all use the same resivior fill thru top of transmission by shifter. Takes five gallons. Some say a bit less in case your axle seals are bad.
