Before I bought my 2N 9 mos or so ago, I did a bit of research to figure out what kind of residual value these things had. Around here (N Texas area), an N in good running shape, decent tin, and ok rubber, goes for $2,000 - $2,500, depending if it comes with any accessories (fancy word for a mower). Asked around and found the price range has not changed much in 20 years. So on one hand, if you take care of your machine, you will get your money back, maybe a little more. But, on the other hand, say you do get exactly what you paid for it back when you sell it in 10 years, that same amount of money is not worth as much. I think the 50 yr inflation index average somewhere around 4%, gross average. So let's say you pay $2,000 for an N, the cost of your fun is 4% per year (excluding gas and maintenance) or $80. About the same cost of 1 trip to Six Flags, or 2 trips to professional sports venues (without beer, hotdogs, or parking), or about 1/4 of a deer season (less the meat value). Therefore, it is a pretty reasonable hobby to have. Heck, my wife spends more than that in a year with dues to her quilting club. As you probably can tell, I've put way too much thought into convincing my wife. As I get to go to Six Flags or a Game only if I stumble across free tickets, and deer season has become a family event, it was a pretty easy case to make. Especially since it means: a) I have a "guy thing" to do with the boy, and, b) I now can mow, move hay, etc in a fraction of the time, freeing up time to help her out with other chores. Remember the old saying: If you can't dazzle 'em with Brilliance, Baffle 'em with BS.
