Anyone use a JD no.5 on their N? Any good drawings showing how to fab a mount and use the 3pt to raise the sickle?

Maybe better yet, know where to buy a ford 3pt sickle mower? ;-)

Here's a Ford sickle mower for sale. This link is to page 2 where there is a nice one listed for $1000. Page 3 has another one, not as nice for $500. Seems steep to me, but I got my JD#9 for free!

Thanks for the link. It seems steep to me too. You got a better price on your mower than I did. I had to give $3.00 for the no.5.

Atne, I had a uncle that mowed all his hay for bout 30 + years with that set up. The #5 has a plate across the front that looks like a drawbar, there's two plates bolted tothat bar and to the drawbar on the tractor. He used a cable arraingment to raise the mower, didn't have a remote cylinder. I think he left the straps from the top link to the drawbar on, took the arms on the lower links off, hooked the cable there run it thru two pulleys then back to the arm that raises the cutterbar. This worked real well, I think I have a #5 manual that has the hookup in it. I still have that mower, but I haven't used it in ten years, any how hope that answered your question & good luck withit

John,

I printed a drawing of that setup today. I couldn't quite determine how it was done, but your description has cleared some of that up for me. Thanks!

Glad I could help, maybe you can do the same for me someday. Oh by the way one thing I remember my uncle always telling me, don't get your fingers in there when ya fold it up, wish I could talk to him now, REGARDS John

I know what you mean about the fingers. I have been told more four fingered farmer and three legged dog stories ever since I got the 5.

MY JD mower mounted right up to the three point but the sickle only raises as high as you can raise the entire assembly. I don't think the JD 5 will work for you if you are looking to bring the sickle up 90 degrees like you might in ditch mowing. It does fold up manually for transport but I don't think the geometry is right to mow folded. Mine had the toplink mount there and the lower arms mounted by using J bolts on the lower arms. I'd show ya a picture but it's out at the "boy's farm" I lent it to last summer.

I have a No.5 and use one on a Farmall. Don't want to mow verticle or ditches, strictly for hay. Saw a pic for a 3pt mount on the web, using the 3pt to raise the sickle in place of the handle / cylinder (not to fold sickle into up / down pos). Attaches to the tractor with a drawbar style hitch. I think I can fab a similar setup. Where would a draw bar attach on an N?
