I made a mistake and followed the advise of a wee meaning non n owner and installed an 8v battery in my 2n. Coil fried in 2 hours. Took distributor out and installed new points, condensor, and coil and also put a 12 v to 6v resistor in the line going to the coil. The coil reading prior to the resistor was 8 v and 4.5 v. After the resistor installation it is now 8v and 2.5v. The tractor starts and runs fine and the reading at the coil when the tractor is running is a steady 6v. My question is what should the proper amp reading be? I saw it as high as 20 amps when first started and after 1/2 hour of heavy work it is around 15 amps. Am I ok with this set up. I have learned my lesson but already invested $60 bucks into an 8v battery. My other 8n will always have the 6v system and when the 8V goes belly up, I am going back to the 6 v, even

2.5 volts at the coil primary (with the points closed) is about the lower threshhold that the ignition will operate at.. The engine must be in good shape to operate at that voltage. It is better though than operating it at 4.5 volts as you found out. Get another one of those 12 to 6 volt dropping resistors and put it in paralell with the other one. This should get you into the ball park of about 3.5 volts. It is a good thing that you have a 2N/9N generator without a voltage regulator, otherwise the 8 volt battery would go dead on you since it would not charge with a voltage regulator that is normally set around 7 - 7.5 volts. Since you do not have a voltage regulator you do not run into that problem. I would cut back a little on the current by adjusting the 3rd brush somewhat. 15 amps continuous will eventually overcharge the battery. You would need to check the voltage of the battery to check if you are overcharging. I would not go over 9.6 volts. (8 volt battery)

Claus: The old 2n ran fine for about 45 minutes last night and then started to cut out. While it was cutting out, I checked the spark intensity and everything seemed ok. The amperage readings were around the 14 to 15 level and they dropped off a bit when I temporarily turned the lights on. The tractor then just quit and would not start. I had the same voltage to the coil as before. the coil was not hot to the touch.I changed the coil and still no start. The generator however was very hot and I could not hold my hand on it. I did not turn down the 3rd brush yet. After about 15 minutes the tractor started. I took a volt reading off the generator and it was putting out 9.5 volts. Any suggestions? This morning she fired right up and I ran it for a minute and everything seemed fine. Should I say to heck with the whole 8v battery and put a fresh 6 v back

I am not, nor have I ever been an advocate of 8 volt batteries because of the additional problems that have to be overcome. The 3 brush generator is not designed for continuous 15 ampere output. Turn down the 3rd brush... Remember the higher voltage will also go into your field coil... I do not know why your tractor cut out.. It seems that your igntion is ok... Happy Motoring

Claus:

Thanks for all your assistance. At this point I don't want to risk screwing more things up in the ignition and so I am going to put the new 6 v battery back into the old 2n and keep the 8v as a warm booster battery if necessary when -40 degrees. Hope everything works out right and will keep you posted.

Thanks

Claus, Iv'e been waiting for a mention of adjusting the the 3rd brush on about 5 of these forums. Please describe to me how you change/adjust the 3rd brush. Thanks

There should be a hole in back of the generator. There is a little screw that one turns. I do not remember the direction to move the 3rd brush away from the top brush but moving it away from the top brush will decrease the voltage to the field and consequently the current. I also understands that very early units did not have a 3rd brush adjustment.

Thanks Claus, I'll check that out today. That's the first info that has made any sense to me on that subject.

Claus:

Thanks a bunch. I was hoping you would be on line for the answer. Keep warm this winter. My 2n is going to be set up with a 5 foot Erskine rotary snowblower and my 8n will be set up with the Dearborn front mount snowplow with chains. I can hardly wait and hope we have above average snowfall so i can play in the snow.

Have a good one.
