Sounds that make you go...Hmmmmm

Have a funny noise when starting my 9N #12979. When starting, there comes a noise from inside the clutch case that sounds like Henry's trapped in there with a hammer, beating on the case. The frequency is close to crankshaft rotation frequency, and goes away upon the engine starting. 9N is equipped w/ 12V conversion, starter's tightly mounted to tractor, Sherman step-up equipped. I always start with clutch pedal depressed.

It sounds as if something loose is making contact with something else as it comes around (as on the flywheel or clutch mechanism.)

All help and some criticism greatly appreciated.

Jon

Yes, I agree with Sam. Mine was doing the same thing. pulled it apart and replaced starter ring gear. No noise now.

I don't pretend to be much of a mechanic, but will hazard a wild guess. It seems that your noise only happens when the gear teeth on the starter bendix are driving the gear teeth on the flywheel - so I'm guessing that you're missing a tooth on one of them!

You could inspect the starter bendix by removing the starter, and you can see the flywheel through that hole once the starter is out. I guess the 2N has a timing port on the right side like my 8N, so you could peek at the flywheel teeth there also. Just my $.02 worth - and good luck with it.
