I need to replace my exhaust system on my 41 9N and i would like to know what i have to do to convert from a rear exhaust to a verticle through the hood style . I am sick and tired of smelling the fumes and am hoping this will help.

I had a vertical exhaust on my 9N and switched to a horizonal because of the fumes and also the noise. I beleive in both cases you are better off with a horizontal. The only drawbacks are when you change implements you get exhaust and also the possibility of starting a fire.

Since I have put mine up I don't seem to smell exsaust fumes anymore than befor if not less. The wind disapates it. You do have to watch for tree branches. But I don't have to watch for fires starting now from the muffler in tall grass or stuffing it in the snow or dirt either. I made my bracket and had a pipe bent and used a new original exsaust for the part. Got 45.00 into it. You better use 2-braces so you won't crack the exsaust manifold. You could bend my stack in haft and it won't put a strain on the manifold. I put one more bracket off the bell housing area close to the outlet made of 1/4 in steel and another one off the front head and gen. bracket. Mark H.

These tractors are notoious polluters, with a lot of unburnt gas coming out the pipe. If you add oil blowby, and throw in a little antifreeze steam, it probably isn't very good to sniff.

I have a really tight 2N engine, and still the exhaust occasionally buged me from the hoizontal pipe. So I tried the verticle route, and sometimes it was good, but when it was bad it was unbearable. I put an extension on the pipe, which helped, but I lost the whole setup to a low lying tree branch.

I went back to horizontal, but I went to Auto-Zone, and bought one of those hot rod flare out tips for the exhaust pipe for a couple of bucks, and pointed it down and to the right. I almost never smell exhaust anymore.

Hope this helps,
Take Care
Steve

Uh...Wouldn't a vertical exhaust blow back in your face while your mowing, plowing, disking, playing, etc.? Unless you stuck it way up in the air, the N hood is short enough that you would be really close. I had real good luck with one of those aftermarket tailpipe tips that face downward on my exhaust. 'Course, my wife chuckles when she sees it since it's chrome and looks "hot rod". Although, I have never had one with a vertical exhaust, so I am just trying to think through it a bit...

I agree with Mike. Plus, when you got the stack high enough so the exhaust doesn't blow in your face you may have interference problems with tree branches, etc, depending on where you live.

Mine is a vertical which does not go through the hood but along side it. It has a bracket that runs to a head bolt. It didn't require anything, pipe and muffler are one piece. I think the bracket came with it but it is very simple to make if it doesn't. I may have had to buy the rain cap.

I was about to comment on Not going through the hood. Steve is correct with the factory bracket comming of the cylinder head bolt and the pipe running along the edge of the hood. Someone put an extra bracket through the side if my hood and kind of wrecked the hood. I installed a new one under the axel. No more smoke in the face. Frank
