Greetings.... I'm seriously considering the purchase of a 1947 2N. It appears to have three mechanical issues. The first is a clunking sound just after you release the clutch, only with the transmission in reverse. What could this be? How difficult is it to repair the transmission? The second is some lateral movement in the shafts coming out of the steering box. The steering is quite tight, with both wheels responding at the same time and no shimmy.... just wondered about the play in the shafts. Hard to fix? The third and last question I have is about grease leakage through what appears to be a small breather/fitting near the bottom of the tranny case on the right side. It appears the tractor has been leaking here for a long time. When I run the tractor, it appears to bleed. At rest, I don't think it leaks. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for any help. FORD TRACTORS FOREVER!
Regards, Ralph

Thanks Big Mike, Tim & Ford Man for your informative responses. I think my inclination is to pass this one up and wait for one without the mysterious rattle in the tranny in reverse. Sounds like the steering box issues are manageable, but diggin' into the tranny in search of noises doesn't thrill me, considering what the dude wants for the tractor. The vent puzzled me too.... wondering now what the story is... but I would need to visit the seller once more to tell you more.
Regards,Ralph

The other guys covered the steering gear well. The "clunk" could be either a bad bearing shaft or gear in the trans or worse a loose ring and pinion. If it were equipped with an open drive line this is easy to check but since its not its harder to pinpoint the problem. The ring gear and pinion is gonna be the more expensive of the two to fix. Origionally the ring gear was rivited to the carrier if I remember correctly and replacement ring and pinion sets bolted in , maybe the bolts are loose and the ring gear flopped around and wore its self out. Took one apart onetime and all the bolts were loose but ring gear was ok.We bought it as a non -runner so I dont know how it acted. If the vent you are referring to is on a round plate its the transmission, differential, and hydraulic dipstick combined into one. The N has three seperate drains but only one fill the oil finds its way over the walls in trans and hyd section th the back.Ifin its milky dont wurry too much but if you see metal shavings be wary.Water leaks through the gearshift causing the trans to leak from the dipstick not a big deal to drain and re-fill with new fluid. Go to the Smiths site at 8N.com and read you will learn lots there. If you are not in a big hurry I would look around some and maybe you will find a jewell.....Big Mike

Can't answer the trans questions. On the steering, what is generally worn on these units is the steering sectors, especially in the straight ahead driving position. That's probably what you are seeing in the lateral movement you described. There is no adjustment on worn sectors to make things tighter, unlike the later 8n. Since new sectors are about $300+, most people just put up with the slop until a tooth breaks off which then forces a complete rebuild. However, if the movement you are seeing is due to worn out bearing halves which retain those sectors, the bearings can be renewed for about $30. These 2n steering boxes are tough little units with great mechanical simplicity. My $.02

You can take some of the slop out by shimming the sectors . There are shims available that go in between the sectors and the steering case .

New bearing halves will help also .

See your NH dealer and they should be able to show you what I am talking about .

Worked on my '47 .

By the way , what "vent" are you talking about on the tranny ?

Shimming did not work for me, since in my case the sectors were properly shimmed in the first place. The reason is that the sectors aren't worn evenly. If you shim so there is no play in the straight ahead position, then the sectors bind in the turning position. If you take out the shims so it doesn't bind, then it's sloppy in the straight ahead position again. Shims may make things tighter all the way around if the gears were not shimmed properly in the first place, but if the sectors are badly worn, there will be slop, no gettin' around it. All this is prefaced on the notion that you won't accept any binding on the steering wheel, but I have seen many N's that have the steering wheel bind because someone tried to "shim out" the wear. My $.02
