we must all be gettin cabin fever and just a waitin for the spring to come so we can start hoggin the property. I have been layed up for a yr and a little bit so my property has not been hogged in like 4 yrs, I used to use my neighbors 1910 ford with a 5 foot hog, well I got my tractor a while ago, but could not pass up a deal on a hog for my 9n. so this yr will be the first year to hog with it, I have the orc,, but was wondering about the ability to cut through saplings with this set up, do most of you use a bumper as to not push the radiator through,,,,?? I never, knock wood ,had a problem with the neighbors tractor but am wondering about the 9n, I know I used to just push the saplings over with the front of the ford ,he only had a little bumper strip on the front and worked well.. thanks and sorry this turned into a long post for a short question,
Pat

thanks guys that is what I was thinking too, I guess I will just weld something up, The way I was thinking the bumper on most of the ns look like they may protect a lil but not so much on the bottom, maybe a sort of small brush guard type, thanks again, better get the welder out and make a cattle pusher hahahaa

Pat: If it were my tractor I'd do something to protect the grill and doglegs. Even welding up something fast and ugly to use as a bumper just for the first pass through the brush beats risking a dent or a hole in the radiator. A cutting torch, a welder, an old leaf spring, 2 bolts and 15 minutes -you're good to go.

I have used a 5' Ford brush hog on my '51 8N for about 29 years. My first attempt was a bit ambitious and, with the right front axle I drove over a 3" diameter tree. Ouch! How I didn't take off the muffler is beyond me. Anyway, the blade hit that tree about twice, maybe three times and stalled the tractor. There I sit. I had the whole drive train bound up (no ORC). I fianlly got the trans to neutral, disengaged the pto and got the tractor started. I've never tried that again. Now when I get into some small brush, I cut about a half width of the mower and lift it a bit on the first pass. I also have had an ORC about 18 years, get one.

I have a 52 8n that I hog with.

The engine is good and strong on it and it holds it's oil presure very well.

I use a 5' hog.

If I can drive over it I can cut it...might take a few passes to che it up good though.

I have cut down everything that grows in my area, from saplings, briars, and all kinds of grasses.

We used to have schumac's overgrowing some small meadows. Small groves of them 12'-14' tall and they cam down without any problem

Now that everything I want is down it's a lot easier and quicker.

...I do have a full front bumper to protect the radiator and front.

...be safe.

I made a front bumper for my 8n out of 2 x 4 s and angel iron , its not real strong but it has protected the radiator for some time now and it dont look to bad either . ( I dont have a welding outfit ).
