Well I finially am able to shift my Sherman (shifter pin came out). I shouldn't say how I did it without spliting the tractor. I used JB Weld on the end of shifter and inserted it in the unit. I know that wasn't the smartest thing to do, but.....
Back to my question. When pulling the shifer in back position the ground speed increases and so does the transmission whine. Is this normal or is the Sherman in need of repair?

Thanks everybody. The Sherman shifter in forward position doesn't have near the whine as the back position. Well, I've been using it for three years now in the back position maybe it should be left there?
Thanks Again

My Over & Under Sherman made noise in the high side when backing off the throttle. I have it out now, as am SLOWLY restoring this tractor. All the gears look great, but it may have been the bearings were not set correctly, or had worn some before I got the tractor. I ended up buying some new bearings etc. but don't know yet if that will fix the problem. There are shims to adjust the rear bearing, or actually the front bearing of the tranny where the Sherman joins the tranny. I feel mine were way out of adjustment. Time will tell, if I get this tractor running again.
Good luck!!!
Dave

The Combination Sherman in my Ferguson dose not make any different noises in any of the 3-shift points. In fact it dose not make any noise, so I don't know what to say you could be starting to have problems with yours. Mark H.

Noisy Sherman in high range: could be normal or could be needing repair. Remember, you are turning spur gears a lot faster than in standard range. Spur, or straight cut, gears are noisy. The more lash between the gear mating teeth, the more noisy they are. That is another reason that I use gear oil in my tractors rather than the hydraulic fluid that is being sold. Are you old enough to remember saw dust in car manual transmissions or rear ends? (no, don't put in any sawdust) If the bearings are worn, that allows more lash. I can't help any more than that, but I'm sure someone on this board has more experience.
