Leak free PTO and lift questions

My new (to me) 8N now has a leak free PTO shaft. I left the spline adaptor off, gonna get an ORC.

Now I feel it may be time to drain the fluid and go with the New Holland trans / hydro fluid. I am not sure if my lift needs work or not though. It does shake a little, but was better when the fluid level was higher. It is now right at the bottom of the stick. The lift seems to only operate at the top 1/4 of the lever travel. Also the current fluid is contaminated (milky appearance). I suspect this is from the rotten shift boot. So, do I spend the money for good fluid at this point or do I have lift work to do? BTW, it doesn't seem to leak down very quickly. I assume this means the cylinder / pistons are good?

Thanks,

Arne

Arne..... ...that milky hydro fluid is caused by WATER and it can freeze and break your hydro-pump. Change it NOW!!!

Drain the 5 gals of hydro-tranny fluid, start with the square differential plug, it peees innna bucket with some degree of accuracy. Then drain the big 2-1/2 pump plug. Then drain the big 2-1/2 tranny plug. Fill with 5 gals of Ford/New Holland now recommended M2C-134D hydro/tranny fluid. Fill is up by the rotted rubber shifter boot. Replace yer shifter boot $3 cheep. Boil it in hot water to soften it enuff to streach over everything.

If'n yer lift doesn't leak down fast, I'd say ya gotts no other maintenance issues except new un-contaminated hydro fluid and new shifter boot..... .....Dell

Hey Arne,

I replaced the boot on my ma's 8N, tried the boiling water trick Dell described, Didn't work for me cuz it was 20 degrees outside. I did the inside out trick and used a 5/16 box wrench to pry the bottom out and over. good luck....don t. ....

If you will buy the correct boot, you won't have to boil or struggle with it.There is a difference. don

Time was a factor in this case, last day of vacation/helping ma & the fluid looked like runny vanilla ice cream.

Bought mine from Don B and it fit without a problem. Nice and tight but not a grunt.
