Pulled off the 8N hyd. cover last night, wanted to replace the cam follower pin. Easy 2-hour job, right? HAH! When the cover came off, the first thing I noticed was cracks in the cast-iron axle housing, in the area of the pinion bearing. Nothing visible from the outside. The front bearing retainer is split, looks like a 6-inch lock-washer! The cast-iron is cracked around the top of the ring gear. Trouble is, everything is still holding together. I figure it's been like this for who-knows how long, someone must have replaced the differential gears once upon a time, maybe the ring gear spit and smashed the housing. SonofaB#@*#!! Anyone ever seen this before? Any words of encouragement? Time to split the G@#% D*$# tractor and re-build the whole rear end....

Paul,

Don't dispare! On page 6 of the Vol. 13, No. 2 (Spring 1998) issue of the N-Newsletter is a picutre of a WELDED differential housing. The weld is where the pinion gear front roller bearing outside race goes. This is in the larger 841 tractor. It is owned

AND then I crashed my computer! :-(

So, as I was saying,

The tractor is owned by Irv Nichols who wrote an article to go with the picture. The tractor was badly abused and needed several repairs. He was lucky to find an old welder, with 45 years experence, to do the job. If I get a chance, I will scan the picture and post it to my area on ----- -- An email to me will let me email you when I do put it up.

If you try to have it fixed, be sure to check out the welder before you let him start. Ask for names of previous customers that have had the same type of welding done. Then check with them to see how the welding job has stood up.

You should also read the post linked below, so you are more knowledgeable about how the job should be done.

Good luck,
Regards,
Larry

DaBrow is parting out a couple of 8Ns. I would give him a try. I also saw some rear end stuff on Smith's page for sale too.
