I am rebuilding my Jube's hydraulic's and took the ram cylinder/piston apart...Piston came out OK cylinder is not scored and all else looks OK...Except for one thing ....The FO-19 manual says that there should be a leather "backup" ring in the front of the piston and a O-Ring.....I only have an O-Ring in the slot in the piston....The lift actually holds pretty long when the tractor is off and for the most part works OK...I am trying to fix a bobbing problem .....So the question is...If there was no leather ring do I put one on...Could the absense of the leather ring have anything to do with the bobbing ?...as usual any opinions greatly appreciated...thanks...Alan

Alan, I just did this job as part of a repair on my Jub's hydraulics. I found both the O-ring and leather washer had a section sheared off (as if you were to run a knife down the side of the piston). As I read the FO-19 manual, it points out that the production pistion had the O-ring/leather groove farther back on the piston (toward the open end). With this type of piston if the three point hyper-extends, it's possible that the piston moves too far toward the open end of the cylinder, which allows the edge of the cylinder to cut the O-ring. I think this is what happened on mine. So... something to think about, if you're going to put on a new O-ring and leather backup ring, maybe you want to consider the newer style piston which has the groove farther forward toward the closed end of the piston. That way you also eliminate the possible type of damage I saw on my Jub. BTW I soaked the leather ring and it went on just fine. Good luck! Dave

Alan,
Yes, there should be a leather ring. And the absence of one can cause bobbing due to passage of fluid around piston. Most Ford (New Holland) dealers should have a gasket set in stock for about $15 if I remember correctly. The leather is sort of difficult to install. Make sure you soak in hydraulic fluid before trying to put it on. You'll think you're going to tear it, but it will go on. I think you'll be plesantly surprised with the results. Good luck...Gary
