Hello kind folks,

I replaced the wiring harness and exhaust/muffler last night. I am not sure I have the regulator wired correctly. In fact, I am really unsure how the regulator is to be wired. Could tell me which poles on the regulator go to what?

Thanks tons,

Arne

Arne..... ..wiring is all laid out and color coded for you in yer I&T FO-4 repair manual.

Which according to the I&T are:
BAT = Yellow w/NO tracer
ARM = Yellow w/blk tracer
GEN = Black w/red tracer
FLD = Black w/wht tracer

When I replaced my pre-made wiring harness on my '52 8N, the voltage regulator section had wires of different lengths and colors and you couldn't miss-wire EXCEPT ON PURPOSE. Meaning, you would have to cut the wiring harness appart to get enuff slack to streach the wires to incorrectly wire the regulator.

Now then at the generator end its a different story. There you could accidently miss-wire the field and the generator ground color coded black w/red tracer. But the field is an insulated feedthru and color coded black w/wht tracer.

But the generator output (armature) is a much bigger connector and wire gauge requirement that its seems to me unlikely a careless shadetree mechanic could muck that one up 'cuz thats the big one on the end of the generator and is color coded yellow w/blk tracer.

HTH..... ...Dell

Dell, what you call the "Gen" Black with red tracer is actually the ground wire going to the generator. The OEM regulator had 4 terminals, one being the ground connection. Newer replacement regulators have only 3 terminals. The ground connection goes to the case (Mounting) on these.
The wiring diagram in the FO-4 for the regulator is of little value unless you are rewiring the original regulator with the original harness. Usually, the 3 terminals are marked with letters under the little covers. A or G goes to the output of the generator. F or field goes to the generator field. B or bat, goes to the terminal block. Generator ground to the case of the VR.
Happy Motoring

I didn't look under the little covers for the lables. Thanks!

Dell,

I got the diagram in the manual bookmarked.

The wires on the regulator end were pretty much equal lengths. plus I had to lengthen the coil wire. Wires are solid colors, red black and yellow. That's it. I wasn't that impressed with this harness to be quite honest.

Arne..... ....What can I say, I flunked mindreading.
Obviously, yer wiring harness is not built to Ford 8N specs. Frontmount or sidemount, wiring color code is the same per I&T.

All color really does, is help you to know where and what both ends of a wire are connected to. Its up to you to know if its correct. Electrons are colorblind.

If'n I had to make a WAG, yellow is generator ARM
red is GEN
black is FLD
but I'd ohmmeter 'em to make certain..... ....Dell

I got the wiring figured out, just can't see any lables on the regulator poles. It has three poles sticking out of the bottom. My diagrams show reg's with poles coming out of different sides. Do all regulators of the style I have use the same positions?

Arne Just opening my mouth to change feet, I get the feeling ford tractors use the everybodyelse's gen reg system. Reguardless a picture's worth 1000 words. Go to Pual8n's post about gen problems, then Paul Hass's reply, then hit Claus' site, it'll be lot's of help. There is a reg. drawing, from it you can figure out what lug is what. Also an exp. of what everything does.
Better than good luck Bob.

Arne There are two kinds of gen regulater setups ford's and every one elses, in that respect you'r luckey. Ford syst. works like an alternator reg. dose, controls field current in with resisters usualy on the bottem. If you arn't sure of the lugs, Lift the cover, the terminal's connected to the heaviest coil(the cutout coil) are the Bat and Arm. They should be disconnected with the eng off or at idle to prevent batt drain through the Arm. The Arm lug should be connected to the Field lug straight or through a resister (?) The resistance between the Arm. and Field should go up if the voltage and current contacts are pressed down.(Some Reg's have only two coils voltage and current are done on the same one.)
Hope this helps. Bob

It's looking like I have it close. LOL The Gen seems to be working, need to run it and look for voltage on Bat lug of reg. I flooded it and it got dark though. I should have it figured out tomorrow.
