I have been working on an 8N (about 1952) with a 6 volt system. The tractor has not been started in about 9 years. I've replaced the battery. Someone has, at some time, installed a toggle switch in place of the ignition switch. My problem is that I'm not getting any spark. I've removed a spark plug and laid it on the manifold and turned the engine over, with the switch in both directions, and still no spark. How can I tell if the switch is hooked up properly? I've found the key, so maybe someone could not find the key and just simply bypassed the ignition. Is there some way to tell that I'm getting power to the distributor and that the system is working?

You need a little test light and a cheap multimeter. You can get both at Sears or WalMart or your local auto parts store. Trace the circuits from a known power source(battery) to the other end and see where the current stops. If the key is on, you should have power going to the coil. On side-mount distributors(if yours is a '52, it's a sidemount)the primary wire from the coil to the distributor base attaches to a lug. Where the lug passes through the distibutor base, the insulator can go bad. That's where the test light can be helpful.

You first must have an idea of how the tractor is wired (or supposed to be). A little studying will pay off. Check Neil's site below for wiring diagrams.

Logically start at the battery with a voltmeter (or test light) and check each step of the way-battery, switch,.... right to the coil. If you have power to the coil and no spark, you are down to three components: points, coil, condensor. If it has been sitting that long I would put in a set of points and condensor as a matter of priority.

Also, if you don't have and I&T manual, it is a good investment.

There are a lot of posts on this, so check the archives. Once you have done some testing, post back so we can narrow it down.
