Bushhogging a hillside

While trying to bushhog a hillside that's not all that steep, I couldn't keep the front of the old 9n from raising completely off the ground. I don't have any weights or even a bumper to hang them from. Anyone got any ideas. I'm thinking about rigging up some concrete blocks on front of the tractor or something like that, but at the same time, I don't want to rig up a death trap.

Thanks for the suggestions. Methinks that I had better consider another method for bushhogging that hill. The last time I tried, of course I lost all steering and when I hit the clutch to drop the front end, I lost traction and came back down in reverse. It was a "hairy" situation that I'm not really ready to experience again.

Ronof , man please dont try it , use a weed eater , push mower , be safe , I love these old ns , some call them widow makers , but they are wrong, just use good sense. if the hill is to steep dont mow it .

Hey fast ed. Where in Ohio are you located. My place is near Hillsboro. Thanks for the info. I agree with you that it is just too dangerous to try with this 9n.

Ron,
I bushog across MILD hillsides at my place . I go down the worst hills .

I got a nasty surprise once when I was disking . My land has teraces going down to the creek bottoms . I had finished disking one of them and started to drive UP to the next one . When the front wheels hit a LITTLE bump , the front end went WAY off the ground . I stomped the clutch and dropped the front end right then . I won't drive UP that hill again ! You also loose most of your steering when you have a load on the back .

I won't even attempt what you are doing with my 8N...I go all the way around at a gentle incline and come DOWN the steeper parts hogging...and I have my wheels all set at 60 inch centers...

Take a good look at your lift arms, look at them good and decide if they are heavy enough to keep that N of yours from rolling backwards over top of you?? They will need to do that when the tractor pulls up and the mower has to hold it and you up. The more weight you add, the more weight that will roll over on top of you when it happens. (and just for the record I saw it happen and attended the funeral)
Salmoneye told you exactly right, ease up the hill at an angle, with the mower riding low. and do your work coming downhill. Anytime your steering gets light, your are in a dangerous situation. Work safe, your wife might want to sell the N after you are gone (grin)
