Tapered Shims?

I am rebuilding a 52 8Nengine and have been told that the crank is .013 out. I have bought .010 under bearings and was told to purchase tapered shims to make up the difference. (1-2-3) taper Everyone and everywhere i called today was of no help. Any help as to where I might find them? Thanks, Pokey

You need to know if the crank is .013 out of round or if it is round and .013 undersize but round. If it is out of round and egg shapped you may as well forget any kind of fix on this crank except for having it resized.

It is out of round this much the .010 bearings would not allow you to even turn the crankshaft after the journal cap has been tightened. If it is .013 undersize it is possible that the crank has been turned to .010. It this is the case and the cranshaft journals are still round the .010 bearings will work without shims.

I would not recommend shimming a bearing unless you are a very old experianced mechanic who knows how to live with his mistakes.

For tapered shims go to Napa Auto Store. Crush is important but shimming can be done. It is not cost effective if you value your time. I shimmed my 9n .040 under Ford crank and ran it for 20 years. I shimed my 2.3 liter Ford at 120,000 and ran it to 200,000 miles with out problem . I usually shim new bearing unless the old ones are in good shape. It works for me , may not work for you or anyone else. Patience is required and time.

Years and years ago used car dealers would get a car cheap because the bearings were hammering. They would install a piece of leather belt instead of new bearings. It even worked if you didn't mind redoing it every couple of hundred miles or it put a rod through the side of the block.

Dave, I remember my dad telling me about putting the harness leather in a Ford Model T. But my experience was if the rod bearing is gone, rebuild or break it. I had a frat brother who disconnected one rod on a 56 Chevy and drove around on 7 cylinders.

Hi Pokey,

I've been told the shims you asked about are still available, but I agree with the advice given by Mark, Randy, & Claus. Those shims change the amount of squeeze or "crush" the rod or main bore has on the bearing. The size, roundness, straightness, and overall condition of rod and main bearing housing bores are often overlooked during a rebuild. Rebuilds that don't last can often be traced to this oversight. The difference between too much and too little crush is a matter of only a few 1,000th's of an inch. For good service life the bearing crush dimension must be correct, and at the same time, the bearing clearance must also be correct. Two important dimensions that are related, but separate. Grind the crank and get new bearings that's the only way to go on your rebuild. Mark H.

Folks: Tapered shims were something sold back in the 50's (the old magazines I've seen) along with knurling the pistons to restore a tight fit, or knurled valve guides, all to make for a cheap rebuild. Cheap is the operative word here, more cheap than effective. It won't last. You're just putting off a proper rebuild for a little while. Do what Claus said and get it done right.

Are you going to rebuild it?, or dummy it up?
1. Remve crank
2. Have crank reground and obtain appropriate bearings shells.
Anything less would be a shame..
