My 1948 8N has no lights. I have purchased headlights, tailight, worklight and wiring along with a turn on switch. Does anyone know what the dealer installed switch for the headlight was like? Was it a toggle switch or a knob? Where was it located on the dash?

A lot of the situation hinges on what light kit the dealer purchased and/or installed for a given tractor. Light kits could purchased headlights only, headlights and worklight(S) and headlights, worklight and tail light. Work light kits could be bought either left or right. We usually purchased our light kits headlights only and purchased the work light separately as in doing so you could get a sealed beam work light as we did on our 1950 and 1951 8N's. Switches were as came with the kit, not all kits came with them. My 50 and 51 tractors did not have fused switches, I had an early shocking expierience with that fact in the early 1950's. Our dealer always installed 8N switches on the left dash opposite the choke.

If the holes were never punched out for lights don't do it, sell your side panels to a collector and find some with the holes already out for your tractor. The small square bracket that came with the light kit mounted on the bottom regulator mounting bolts under the R.H. side of the dash on a 1948, Ford discontinued the correct switch 5 years ago for a 9N - 1949 8N it used a screw on knob like the ckoke knob and had short pigtail wires and fuse block on top. I have not seen any reproductions of this yet, hopefully Dennis Carpenter will correct his switch so we have one to use.

I just noticed that the front lights on my 2N has a tiny hole on the top of each light housing. One would assume the it is a drain hole. I hope a dealer didn't install them on the wrong side?

Take a look on the bottom side of the light and I think you will see identical holes there. Ford was always good at making things "optional/interchangeable". Options bring better prices and interchangeable brings cheaper piece cost to make. The headlight pot can go on either side.

I don't know if there is a proper place on the dash for the headlight switch. I know mine is on the left side of the dash lined right up with my knee cap. That's not a GOOD place.

Roger..... ...the dealer installed optional equipment headlight switch p/n 8N-11654-B is a SPST knob pull switch with built-in fuseblock. And was usually mounted on an "L" bracket on the left side under the dash outta the rain.

I've see 'em all over the place. I even saw one with an ivory house switch. I was not impressed with such cheepasss injunuity.

I doubt that you can get an exact replacement, but there are a number of pull headlight switches with built-in fuse that will handle the job with extra contacts for your tail lights. The worklight had its own built-in switch.

DO NOT wire the headlight switch thru the ignition switch. The ignition switch CAN NOT handle the additional current demand of the headlights. ..... ...Dell

Don B has the replacement switches. they are pricey, but they are right. It has the knurled, push-pull knob and the fuses. The location moved from the under-dash bracket to the dash in the later models.

The July 2000 catalog said exact replacement coming soon. I figured they'd be ready by now. Still better than an ivory 110 v house switch, huh?
