My NAA Starting Woes

6V positive ground system.

When I push the starter button down on the tranny cover sometimes there is no start. Just a dead no action nothing response.

Then I push it a couple more times and then the starter spins and the engine cranks and starts.

Before I go into pulling the tractor apart what can go wrong with the starter button if anything at all?

Or because I don't know the history of the tractor too well, but I know that when I replaced all of the wiring, and was having problems I would crank and crank on the starter so maybe I wore out a dead spot?

Is it hard to pull the starter if I need to? My service manual does not go into that detail. But I tried removing it last year and it would not free up or come off the tractor after pulling the bolts and oil filter.

Help snow is melting and I have brush to pile and burn

One thing to keep in mind - the starter has to ground to the engine to work. If the bolts are loose it won't ground.

My 8N gave me similar fits last year. Turns out there was a dead spot on the starter button, if I just rotated the button a little bit while trying to start it, it would eventually find a contact and start. Once I figured this out (longer than I would admit), I was able to use it for quite awhile before getting around to replacing the starter button (also longer than I will admit). This is probably obvious to everyone but me, this discovery made me feel like an actual mechanic.

I beleive the starter is bound up on the flywheel. That may explain why the previous owner had one bolt loose going into the bell housing and why the starter was sort of cock eyed but working on the bellhousing. It wasn't sitting quite flat on the tractor because one bolt was tight and the other loose.

IF it is jammed on the flywheel, I am hesitant to pound at it, but I don't see another alternative...other than making some small wedges and driving those in around the perimiter of the starter and carefully tapping them without cracking the bellhousing.

The tractor is out in the woods with a tarp on it, so I can't really tow it.

Any ideas?

I've had several tractors do that and after checking all the connections, I bought new starter buttons and installed them. Problem solved. (don't forget a new gasket for the trans cover)

I would start with the simple things first, make sure all of the connections are clean, bright and tight. Pull the battery cables off and use a wire brush to clean them. Pull the other cables for the starting system off and use a wire brush or sandpaper and shine them up.

I forgot to mention that I rpelced all of the decayed wiring and it started and ran just fine all last summer. I parked it this fall and tarped it and now the problems are starting it. Richard(KS)

replace the starter button already!!!

They really can "wear out". Actually, the internal contacts get corroded and it really isn't worth the effort to dissasemble the switch to fix 'em when you can get a replacement..... ..Dell
