Rear hubs on recently purchased '49 8n leaking real bad. Removed the wheels and brake drums. Axles extend about 1/32 inch beyond the hubs. Can't get the hubs off. Have a BIG gear puller, and it couldn't get the hubs to budge. Have checked the manual and cannot find any hidden keys or retainers. Am I missing something,or, is the hub seized to the axle this tightly?
I have changed axle hubs before and never had this problem. Thanks for your help.

Rick;

When I replaced the seals on my 48 8n, I pulled the hub and axel out as one piece. I replaced the brakes at the same time. pretty sure I didn't need to pull the hub off the axel.

Regards
Bill

Did it have any sort of extra washer to make the retaining nut be able to push the hub on up on the shaft? I have seen this done and it usually makes the inside end of the lugs grind on the brake springs making lots of noise and eventually wearing the springs into. If this has been done it will be just as tight as if it were not past the end of the axle flange and the nut had it tight like intended.

I am still looking for somebody to help me with getting the Chinese prisoners to make us some under size hubs with smaller diameter splines so you can use them on worn out axle splines and still get them to be tight. We could mail them a new hub with directions to make some with a smaller spline and they probably could make them and ship them over here for about $2.00 each and then we could sell them for about $30.00 and everybody would be happy. Especially me.

There are no hidden clips or retainers. The only
thing holding the hub on the axle is the large nut
on the end of the axle.
The axle/ hub connection is a tapered spline.

Rick, Unless someone has welded the hubs to the axles, you should be able to tighten the puller as tight as you can and then hit the post of the puller with a big shop hammer. It may take several whacks and be sure and stay clear as the thing comes off with quite a pop when it does. Good luck. Rarely, I have had to use heat on the hub.
