She fired right up tonight after about 8 months of work. I have a minor oil leak to fix and some electrical stuff that isn't quite right, but it purrs like a kitten. Amp meter reads -2 to -3 amps and the side marker light does not go out so my best guess is I'm just running of the battery. It is a 12 volt conversion with a front mount 12 volt coil. I followed a diagram that seems to be recommended the most on this board, although I forget the exact web site off hand. The alternator is newly rebuilt and bench tested to put out 14.6 volts. Voltage with points open and closed are correct, I checked them aginst the boards wisdom already! Any advice on what to check for first? Are there any tests I can do with my multi-meter that will narrow my search for the problem? Thank you all for the help, support and entertainment over the past 8 months. Thanks to you, I'm almost to the top of the mountian!

Dell's advice about checking the ammeter first is a good idea -- if it shows a discharge (negative amps) when you first turn the key on, it's probably wired correctly.

When I converted to 12v, the bulb I tried first didn't allow enough current flow to excite the alternator. This sounds exactly like what you're seeing. Use a short length of wire to short out the bulb and see if the alternator starts charging. If it does, try a different bulb (or switch to a diode).

Ringy..... ....Congratulations!

Remember, when you change from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt negative ground, the electrons gonna be going the other direction. That means you have to change the battery ammeter wire around through the ammeter sense loop.

If'n ya can turn off your engine, that means the idiot light is kinda working even if it still glows. It just means you probably got the "wrong" bulb. Does it glow bright before you start? I can't remember the correct bulb number, but I think it is #194.

HTH..... ...Dell

I had to replace the amp meter with a new one that has terminals and I wired it like the diagram showed. This is not something that I converted, it was a 12 volt when I got it, In fact most of it was wired with an old orange extension cord!

Ringy..... ..so swap the leads on the ammeter. Double check by watching the ammeter WITHOUT running the engine, turn the key on and your ammeter should read about -3 amps if everything is wired correctly. (meaning back of ammeter terminals)..... ..Dell
