Amp reading?

I have a 12 volt conversion with a single wire generator. My amp meter reads a constant approx. 12 amps. Is this what it should be reading or do I have a problem? If a problem, are there any guesses as to what it might be.

Thank You Board Members,

Chuck

The important thing here is the voltage reading of the battery. The regulators are set between 13.5 and 14.5 volts... If the altinator does not fold back in current when 13 to 14 volts is reached, then the regulator is not working.. The charge current should start folding back at about 13 volts and trickle at about 14....

Is the regulator the round (thing, for lack of a better term), mounted above the starter switch, which are mounted on the front of the steering box housing?

Thank You,

Chuck

Nooooo ooooo ....The regulator is inside the Altinator... The Round thingy is your cutout relay that should not he hooked up since the conversion to 12 volts....

What does the cutout relay connect to? Can I just take the two leads and connect them together? If not what do I connect it to? Someone like me must have converted this N to 12 Volt?

Thank You,

Chuck

Thank You, Thank You, Tahnk You. When I purchased my 2N, it had already been converted to 12V and the cutout relay is attached. I'll disconnect it, NOW. What is it's function on a 6 volt?

Thank You,

Chuck

The purpose of the cutout relay was to connect the generator to the battery when it was running and disconnect the battery from the generator when one stopped the engine so that the battery would not discharge through the generator...
There should be nothing hooked up to it now since it serves no function... Happy Motoring

Do I just take the leads off the cutout relay and connect the leads to themselves? I'm assuming (as dumb as I am with electrical, I have to start some place), that one wire is coming from the generator to the cutout relay and the other wire from the cut out relay is going to the terminal block. I'm just concerned that I have these two loose wires, that I don't know what to do with.
Your years of experience make you know things that I can only guess. I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'm a old city boy trying to get country.

Thank You,

Chuck

Ok,,,, you have me totally confused now.. I assumed that when you said that the tractor was converted to 12 volts, that you had an altinator. Am I supposed to assume that you have a 12 volt generator that is 3 brush and you are still using the generator?

I misread your original problem.. You did state that you had a single wire generator....This is indeed rare to have one that is 3 brush...If this is indeed what you have then you leave the wiring the way it is. It is hooked up properly to the cutout relay... You have no voltage regulator and to decrease the current, you need to adjust the generator for lower output.. This is accomplished by turning the screw in the back of the generator. If you have such an adjustment. If this is a rebuild of a very early generator, then you may not have this adjustment. Trying to conver to 12 volts and using a one wire generator is the least desireable way to do it because to cover up some other prolem a whole new set of problems are created....
