I have the same sort of hole in my 8n, it's where the Sherman shift lever came out. The Sherman was removed, and the hole plugged with a rubber stopper. Stopper hasn't come out in 6 years.

I guess I have to either find a step up trans or a rubber plug..... .. So I can afford a plug right now. But where?

Go to your local all purpose hardware store and get a l l/4 chromed plug. It has holder legs around it. Straighten every other one out and dob the circumference around the legs with appropriate amount of J.B. weld and insert in hole. Let it set overnight. It will stay. you can paint it or leave it chromed as a conversation piece.

That is where the dealer installed Sherman over or under trans. shifter handle came out, something must have broke at it so it was removed and put back to standard.
