I live in Southwest Michigan and need my 8N to plow snow but I'm having trouble with the starter. When I try to start the engine, it will crank and fire but the starter disengages before the engine actually starts up. Has anyone else had this problem? Do I just need a new starter drive, or should I rebuild/replace the entire starter? I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

Hey Pete, What Dell didn't tell you is the new starter will set you back over a hundred bucks, the new bendix starter drive should be around 30 bucks and you won't have to modify your tractor. Make sure you clean the armature shaft well and DO NOT spin the gear on the new drive, if you do, you won't be able to get it back in and will either have to disassemble the drive to reset the gear or go back to the parts store and buy another. While you have the starter out you might want to replace the brushes, if you don't feel qualified to do that yourself take the starter to a good electric motor repair shop in your area and have them do it for you. Good luck, Mike

Thanks for the additional info Mike. I pulled the starter off tonight to look it over. At the very least I will put on a new bendix, and I will probably have a starter shop go through the whole thing. The armature shaft seems to have a lot of end play, about 1/8", is this normal? Thanks again.

I had the same problem last year. Went to the New Holland dealer and bought a new starter drive assembly. Problem solved.

Pete..... ..yep, yer starter bendix drive is onnna last leggs. Recommend replace it with one of those new "clutch" style starter drives, just a few $$$ more. You may need to grind a notch at about 1-2 o'clock for eazier starter installation.

In the mean time, make certain yer starterdrive is "squeekie clean". you might make it thru the next day or so.

Ya might also might try gettin the starter turning the motor BEFORE you turn the ignition switch on. Also a quick pull of choke before ignition switch on..... ....Dell

Thanks for the info Dell. How can I tell if a starter drive is the new clutch style? Is their a certain part number, or can you suggest a drive available from one of the online parts dealers? I didn't think about the trick with cranking the engine first, then turning on the ignition, I'll try it tomorrow. I often do this with my race car in the summer when the engine is hot. Thanks again. Pete
