Need help, Only have oil pressure of about 10# for about 10 minutes. Drained the oil and can feel slight movement in the end of oil pickup tube, and what sounds like a faint clicking noise when attempting to move the tube. I do have a new edition of the IT shop manual, Started removing the front end in preparation to remove the oil pan. This is in following instructions from previous postings on this board. Am I following the proper procedures? Sure wish one of you people lived next door to me. What all should I be prepared to find and how far to go with this problem. Thanks for any and all suggestions or information. Have a good one.

How odd!
I'm experiencing much the same problem w/ a '44 9N; ol pressure is about 35psi when I fire it up but drops to near 0 after about 5-10 minutes..this is a machine that apparently has been poorly cared for before I got it, though externally it wasn't bad at all!
I gave it a cosmetic refurb, and replaced all the electrics w/ a 12 volt setup and a host of other things, but was hoping the engine would be fine. hmmmm.....
Checked the oil screen and found a lot of sludge / gelled oil on it( I did change out the ol and filter before starting), so dumped in a qrt of Rislone...that pretty promptly lowered the pressure about 5 psi right off the bat and still have the drop in pressure, though not down to 0! And even though there's little or no pressure indicated, the engine sounds fine(!)

I think I might blow out the lines, and perhaps replace the relief spring (on the timing cover); it's also a matter of time to get to it!!!...as has been said over on the ATIS list, try the simple things first!

Did this happen all of a sudden? more than likely the pump housing is worn around the gears and also the bushing where the shaft goes through. the best repair is a new housing with bushing and a gear kit, you must measure your old gear width because Ford had 2 different pumps and parts are not interchangeable.

Maybe you might want'a take the oil line off the fileter and make sure that the line(s) are clean, expecially the one that goes to the oil press. gauge.

Hi George, thanks for the info, could you please explain your procedure just a little more as sometimes I am a slow in getting things through to my brain. If the tractor is not used for a couple of weeks it does lose it's prime. Thanks, Have a good one.

Ace,

When my pickup tube failed, and the tractor sat over the winter, it wasn't able to re-prime itself at all. The failed joint was so minor it was very hard to find. I repaired it by re-doing the silver soldered joint.

If yours can prime, I would think it could produce full pressure. You may have more than one problem?

When I pressurized the oil gallery, It was VERY obvious where most of the oil was going. Each cam bearing made a flood but the mains only seeped a little.

Since yours has pressure to start, the pump must be working. I think you have a major leak somewhere.

I am going through the same thing right now. Not to frighten you with my experience, but I have had quite an ordeal finding a oil pick up tube that is correct. The original tube came loose at the pump. First used one was to short to line up with the drain hole. Second one was to long to line up. Third new one from New Holland ($140.00 ouch) was welded together crooked. Fourth new one was close but I had to heat and bend it to line up. Put everything back together and the tube is now being hit by the crankshaft. Took everything back apart. Am now debating wether to heat and bend again to miss crank shaft. I am afraid that it will them be to short to line up over hole so drain plug/screen will fit, plus I don't want to ruin a $140.00 part! What a mess for what should be a standard procedure. Hope this puts you a little ahead in your repair.

Which pump is in your tractor? New Holland only sells the tube for the larger oil pump, if you have the small oil pump you have to hope the used ones are labled correct.

Thanks Scott,
Not sure which I have. It's a 52. The part that bolts onto the oil pump it triangular with three bolts, then the tube goes down to a cup that should be center over the drain hole so the round screen on the drain plug will center in the cup. I've read here that the whole thing looks like a tulip and that describes it pretty good. It matches the broken one that came off, but is there another style that would fit and miss the crank? Thanks

After you remove the oil pan you'll git a much better idea as the state of affiars. You'll be able to inspect the bowls of the engine.

Oil pick-up tube and screen, oil pump, oil press relief valve, and generally all of the muck that has accumulated.

Now would be a good time to git a can or 2 of mineral spirits or some other type of cleaning agent.

Also you need a seal for the pan. Might want to re-paint the pan before you put it back on.

Well, if you have gone this far, I'd pull the head and check the stuff their too.

So, maybe an overhaul might be in your future.
