My 9n engine was running great, then it began to get really hot, and then it shut down.

I let it cool for about an hor, and it fired up, I drove it about 75 feet, then it shut down.

I let it sit for a couple minutes, it fired up but only for 30 seconds, then shutdown.

New rebuilt carb, plugs, coil, condensor, points, cap, etc. etc.

Whre should I start...with the midnight test too? I'm getting current to the output side of the coil. 9N'er

Tom, a scenario:
The engine got hot.. a blown head gasket...coolant gets into the cylinders and drowns out whatever fire is going into the cylinders. You wait awhile and fire it back up.. it ignites for a short while before the coolant takes over again. What's the oil look like?
I sure don't want to challenge some of the smartest guys on this board; just want to offer another possibility.
BTW, I still need yours and Tyler's address so I can mail you both my portion of the payoff.

Question:

When dave#1 vomited all over you, did any get on your distributor? This could be a problem!

Do you have the correct resistor(s) in the ignition circuit? Do you have a new ignition switch.

Did it get hot enough to spew out coolant and maybe get the distributor wet? If it is wet try spraying WD40 on everything around the distributor and the plugs and wires. Don't get it inside the distributor. It will ruin the points if it gets on them.

When you say that it really gets hot, what does that mean? Did you blow the radiator cap? I don't remember if part of your restoration that the engine was rebuilt... If so, you may want to check the torque on the head nuts... Go with the temp thing first. This may be a clue...Is the water circulating? Only after you are certain that the engine is not seizing up on you, continue with troubleshooting the electrical system and then the fuel system..
Happy Motoring
