after putting a new seal in my late model 8-N I still have a leak. One manual shows and inner oil seal which I did not find in my tractor.Does anyone know if it would be ok to put the inner oil seal in this tractor? The seal I replaced was the outer oil seal and while I was there I replaced the bearings. Also does anyone know the function of the cotter pins in the botton of the oil and transmission pans? Mine in the transmission oil pan is leaking. What does this mean and should it be repaired?

Most tractors need more done in this area of the tractor than just replacing a seal, ther are 3 seals and a gasket on late mode 8N's and 1 seal is even different on early and late 1952's, the shimming is overlooked alot, the axle hub is a very important part so make sure it's ok, and finally the coorect bolts holding everything together.

Thanks for the comments. I do not think my 8-N has an inner seal but only the outer oil seal and the cork seal.

I just went thru the same problem with mine a month ago. Dealer says all 8n's have inner seal "NOT TRUE". Did you also replace the cork seal? i think it is suppose to keep the oil from seeping out between the axle splines and the hub splines. Just to make me feel better I sealed the slines with liquid gaskget sealer. So far no leaks. Did you pack your wheel bearings with grease like the manual said too. The bearings do not depend on the oil to lubricate them.

I have the same problem. New seals, but it still leaks. The root of the problem for me is that I can not tighten the axle nut enough...because it is striped. I bought a new shaft and will some day replace it.

Another option is you could buy a special nut that will tighten down on the striped threads.

Dillie..... ....the cotter pin innna tranny drain hole is Ford's high-tech anti-plugged up scheme.

If'n yer drippin there and ya still have a rear-axle leak, could be ya putts more than 5 gals of MC-134D hydro-tranny oil in yer tranny filler-up?

Don't be too surprized that yer 50 yo tractor has leaks. You have to "split yer tractor to replace yer tranny input shaft seal $3 cheep. Most just bailing wire a salmon can under the tranny drain to keep it from peein onnna the floor..... .Dell

Only rear housings designed for the inner seal can have one installed, as an area is machined out for the seal. Also, the original axles were not machined for the seal, though later 8n's and aftermarket ones are. Look for a bulge under the axle housing where the brake backing plate is bolted on to identify the style with the inner seal.

As for the leak, did you install the seal with the lip toward the oil side (differential)? Was the hub grooved?

I always thought the cotter pin was to keep dirt and other large foreign matter out of the hole, and keep it open. Sounds like you might have an engine rear main seal that is leaking. Not serious unless it leaks a lot of oil. Just don't let the engine run out of oil.
