I have a Jubilee with very grabby clutch...No matter how I let the clutch out it would never be a smooth release ...It always grabbed hard and lurched the tractor...I fully expected to see the disc worn down and the rivets engaging on both the flywheel as well as on the pressure plate...I also had a transmission leak that I was going to fix at the same time...To my surprise the pressure plate and the disc were actually in good shape ...the flywheel also had no score mark or grooves...What I did notice was that there was alot of trans oil on all parts and it seemed like wax in some places...I attributed the grabby clutch to the oil ....I cleaned all parts and replaced the disc just for the heck of it ...When I got the new disc I noticed that the old disc was a solid disc with the material on the outer edge of the disc but it did not have springs / damper assembly that the new one had...I was told that my old disc was a "heavy duty "disc and the new one is not...Question is ...Is the old disc a "heavy duty" disc and if so can I replace it with the standard disc...Do I also need to replace the pressure plate with a stndard pressure plate?????
As usual any opinions greatly appreciated...Thanks...Alan

The one without the spings is H.D. but must only be used with the pressure plate the does not have adjustable finger bolts, the standard disc has damper sring and that pressure plate has adjustable fingers. Lightly sand all surfaces you are going to reuse like flywheel.

I like to have the flywheel face resurfaced and a new pilot bearing installed. I'd feel safer installing a matched set of clutch and pressure plate, but can't say for sure if it's necessary. The heavy-duty is usually a 10" and the standard is a 9", so I'm not sure how yours matches up. I like all new components when the tractor has to be split, 'cause it ain't no fun to do it again later. The slick places on the old clutch would cause it to grab and slip. I'd be trying to seal up the oil leaks while I had it apart.

The lack of spring cushions on the hub/center section of the clutch does not mean by itself that it is a heavy duty clutch, especially on a low rpm engine like the N. I think it means that it is a cheaper clutch. Anyhow, those spring cushions make for a lot smoother engagement of the clutch when you let the peddle out. So....if you are having problems now with a grabby clutch, I would go with a clutch that has the spring cushions. If you have oil all over the place, you probably have a bad rear engine seal, so, not to rain on the parade, but unless you fix that your clutch is going to get all sticky and slipping very shortly after installing a new one. My $.02
