I bought a 48 8N a few weeks ago with the intention of tearing it down and restoring it. But since I was able to get it running with just a little work and since we are still getting snow here in the Upper Peninsula Of Michigan I deceided to use it for a while and see what troubles I would discover. Other than a few oil leaks and the fact that the brakes are about shot it seems to run fairly well. Today I took it down the road to help clean out my neighbors dive and noticed that at times in 4th gear the front wheels start wobbling. If I turn the steering wheel one direction or the other the wobble stops. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this or what I should check. Thanks for your help and I am sure I will have more questions as I start the restoration.

I had that problem last year.I found that the bearings on the steering wheel shaft were worn out.If you can turn the Steering wheel without the arms on the steering box moving, that could be your problem. Also if you turn the steering wheel and watch the shaft it may move up or down in the tube without moving the arms on the box.Hope this helps you out.

Mine does that to, but haven't got around to fixing the problem yet, maybe this year. When I jacked my front end up off the ground I noticed that the wheel bearings where in need of new grease. the old grease is caked and gives very little lubrication. This year when I go up there (to my recreational property) I'm going to take my wheels off and check it out. Stan

I had this problem on my 48 8N and in my case it was worn splines. The right pitman arm had worn splines. I patched it with brass shim stock and it is steady. Now you have reminded me of another thing I need to fix.

BTW, if you are on the road in 4th you can rest a foot on the pitman arms and keep this wobble way down.

If this tractor is truly an 8N it does not have steering sectors. Check toe in which should be about 1/8 to 3/16. perhaps this will be hard to maintain with worn parts. Possily worn center pin in axle.+

At the rear of the axle support tubes (radius rods) at the front of the foot rest check if the ball moves in the socket, you can grind a little off the cap or replace the cap, if it still does it, your dealer can rebuild the gearbox but it will be expensive.

By turning the wheel you are loading the front end parts. You should jack up the front end and check for play in the wheel bearings and steering linkage along with toe in settings. Mark H.
