The radial engine has only one crankshaft throw journal per bank of cylinders. Their is only one connecting rod that is connected directly to the crankshaft. It is the "master rod". The other connecting rods are all connected to the master rod at the bottom of the master rods bearing and bearing cap. The master rod is the only one that rotates on the crankshaft. The slave rods as they are called ride around on the bottom of the master rod.

The radial engine always has an odd number of cylinders to each bank of cylinders arranged around the crank throw journal. The largest radial engine ever made was of 28 cylinders and had a cubic inch displacement of 4360 cubic inches. These engines were used on the B50, B36, C97 and a few other planes that I can't remember right now.

I was an engine mechanic specialist in the AF and worked on the engines of the KB29 which had the R3350 engines and the KB50 which had the R4360 engine. Both these planes were converted bombers that were used for in-flight refueling of fighter planes. The KB29s were the last thing that the B29 were used for before they were all scrapped around 1960. I don't know of a single B50 that is still in existance. Their are still a few B29s. One is the one that the Confederate Airforce in Texas has and the other is the Enola Gay in Washington DC.

Does anybody know of any others?

There is a guy that has a 20 some cyl. radial engine mounted on a big car trailer. He takes it around to steam and gas engine shows. I have seen him in Pa. Sounds great! I saw a B 29 about 5 years back at Martins State Airport (Md.). I may be wrong, but i think i remember it to be the last one flying. It was much snaller than i had thought it would be. Also got to walk up (25 feet) to the stealth and the SR 71!

Well, even as I look at it, I'm still not sure how a radial engine works. I always meant to buy that Mattel kit when I was a kid, but I ended up getting the V-8 one. I wanted the visible girl one but Mom said NO.

If you do a search on "animated gif" or a variation of it, you will find all you need. I was looking up some animated gifs for a site I was building a few months ago and remember seeing several like yours.

As you can see, it is the basic design for a radial engine used on aircraft. Tore down a P&W R985 and rebuilt it as my project when I went thru my A&P (Airframe & Powerplant) school back in 70-71. Same they dont make them any more in the states. Now people are having to buy new ones from Russia.

I really love the sound of a radial engine starting and ideling! Somewhere i have a wav. file of a P&W starting up. I have 2 freinds that have 1940s biplanes. They are the greatest way to fly!!!
