Put the Pertronix Electronic Ignition on my 800 Ford..... At this point, I'm sure not impressed. Tractor idled ok...reff it up and it missed like hello. Took it out and put the points back in...all was well. Called my neighbor mechanic over and reinstalled the Ignitor....same problem when missing at higher rpms. Adjusted the timing but still missed at higher rpms. Took it back out and reinstalled the points....Runs fine, reves up fine..... ..
Has anyone else had problems with this?

BTW....12 volt system, neg ground, 12 volt generator.

Thanks. RT

For inquiring minds.....:)...I called the Pertronix Help Desk. (BTW I have a new coil, new spark plugs and wires, new distributor cap and new rotor.)
They asked me if I checked coil for Ohms...which I had. Should be 3. (1.) They suggested that I disconnect the Pertronix hot wire from the coil and run it directly to the battery....if it runs ok at higher rpms then I have a low voltage drop going to the coil. (2.) They said if this didn't work to try and find a number on the distributor and call them back with it. Chances are they sent me the wrong kit..... Which they said was MOST LIKELY.

I too have installed a pertronix system. My question is did you put in a new coil? Check and see what kind of voltage you are getting from the coil primary into the distributor. I had problems with mine at first and was frustrated, but now it is working great.

Check your system voltage. My Pertronix is very sensitive to low voltage, and will not start when cranking volts are below 10 volts. Other than that it's great! Took a tractor that was ready for a rebuild and has made it function for another year. Sure didn't cure the smoking problem tho..

I had a link to a hotrod/classic car forum ( on my old computer) to a thread dealing with the Pertronix Electronic Ignition. Those people had serious issues with the unit. I spent a half hour looking for the forum and couldn't find it...you might try a flat head Ford V8 forum search.

First, I would like to say that I am not familiar with the Pertronix system. Having said that, the problem is probably that the coil primary is not being allowed to saturate at higher RPM due to a shorter on time. The dwell angle is probably a little short at lower RPMs as well, but one does not notice it. I would return the unit and try another one. If the replacement acts the same way, then I would get a refund... The only advantage over a mechanical breaker system (In good working orer) on these tractors is that they stay in good working order and require little or no maintanance.
Happy Motoring
