I am currently overhauling my 1941 9N. Upon removal of the .040" liners, a small crack was found in the block in the No.3 cylinder about 3" from the top of the block. Prior to performing the overhaul, I had never noticed any loss in coolant. What are my options? Do I have to worry about this at all, since new .040" liners will soon be pressed back into place? Are there any types of sealants out there that can withstand the temperatures involved?

Rich, Just a suggestion, try mixing up some JB Weld and force it into the crack. Then clean off the excess. I might be wrong, but when the new sleeve is pressed in, it should clean off any little bit of residue left. Maybe someone else has a better fix. Good luck!!

Dave, Thanks for the advice. I was thinking of doing this and had just started going through the archives to see what else was out there. The crack is barely visible and I'm not sure if anything will be able to penetrate far enough in order to maintain an effective bond. I will also see if the crack is in an area where I could apply some JB Weld to the outside of the cylinder (within the cooling jacket of the block). It would all depend if I could get to it through an exposed opening (eg. freeze plug) and be able to apply it. Then it would be even further away from the heat of combustion, and the seal would be ten times better.
