Foaming radiator...

I remember seeing a post out here in N-land last week about a radiator that would boil out a quart of water at shutdown. Came down to bad headgasket or an upside down thermostat I believe. Well, my tractor has been foaming a bit since I got it so I tore into it this weekend and found mine has NO thermostat. Would this cause the foaming also? Thank you all for any feedback...

Hey,
let me tell you my experience....I suspect you may have a bad radiator. I had this same problem with my 9N. It would overflow coolant when running under load, and sometimes when the tractor was shut off, it would boil over and blow coolant out theoverflow and even past the cap. Long story short, I replaced the radiator...problem solved. Just a note, the old rad would do it with or with out the thermostat. Now I run a new rad with pressurized cap and thermostat, can bushog the thick stuff and never lose a drop. I also switched from a pusher fan to a puller fan. Not sure if this made any difference, but I know the radiator fills up with a lot of chaff now!
Good Luck,
Gord

Baggsy..... ..unless ya' gotts soap in your radiator, it shouldn't foam (grin).

I would be for re-torqueing the head, 55 lbs if nuts, 70 lbs if bolts. Start in the center and work your way out to the edges, all 21 of 'em.

If that doesn't stop the foaming, then it is new head gasket time.

Lets hope that the radiator hasn't leaked into the engine oil. If oil looks like chocklet milk, ya' got water in the oil. Replace the 6 qts oil and filter too..... ...Dell

I got that foaming feeling yesterday while bush-hogging some real thick stuff with a 5' hog. Lots of broom straw seed in the radiator which had to be cleaned every 20 minutes or so. I don't currently have a thermostat either and no problem unless under severe load for prolonged time. Luv my N even though it has been rode hard and put up wet for 50 years it seems to keep kicking. ds

When I got my 8N, it had no thermostat and did not foam... Do you get any creamy colored gunk on the radiator cap. Perhaps you might be getting some oil in the coolant. Good luck, p
