I have a question. How do you change the packing at the end of the crank shaft just ahead of the flywheel. I could not find it anywhere in the IT manual. This is on a 48 8N. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Odie..... ....I've never heard a rear tranny seal being called a "packing", but if'n it works for you, thats ok by me.

All N-Engine crankshaft seals are a 2-part seal scheme that requires the removal of the cranshaft to install the 1/2 in the block.

Obviously, to remove the crankshaft, you must remove the castiron oil pan. To remove the oil pan you must remove the front axle support. To remove the front axle support you must remove the front axles.

For access to the rear seal, you must remove the flywheel. To remove the flywheel, you must "split the tranny". And if'n yer rear engine seal is leaking so bad that you think you need to replace it, ya better well think about replacing your gunked up clutch disc too.

And while ya got the tranny apart, replace the tranny input seal, $3 cheep.

All these procedures are more fully explained in the I&T FO-4 manual..... ...Dell

Dell after taking a second glance through the I&T manual. I discovered the area where it explained how to remove the "seals". Obviously I must go page by page and look more closely.
