Implement Question

I have 5 acres of large red oaks. The amount of leaves these trees shed is mind-boggling. I was hoping the bushhog would help in mulching, but it really doesn't do much of anything. What kind of implement for the 8n would help me with this nightmare? I've been hand-raking and burning for 2 months now!

Thanks,
N8nO

What's the harm leavin' the leaves on the ground? Unless you use the area as a lawn in the fall and winter, let 'em do the job they were meant for. Saves a lotta time you could otherwise spend outdoors with the wife -N- chillins.

It's a little spendy if you're just looking for something to use around your own property... around $4000. This particular one is a commercial-duty blower intended for municipalities, parks departments, golf courses, contractors, etc. I believe there are others out there that are more consumer-oriented in duty cycle.

3pt mounted PTO driven giant leaf blower!! Easy to do too, just need a big squirrel cage fan from a scrap yard.

I used to spend a lot of time raking and burning leaves until I got a good leaf blower. I can do my entire yard (about an acre) in 45 minutes. It is also useful in keeping the front walk and garage apron clean. I have been thinking of installing it on the 3pt of the 8n. But my wife thinks that a little weird. I think she just doesn't like the idea because Stihl leaf blowers weren't original equipment.

Howse makes a finishing mower with mulching blades on them. I am going to get the 6 foot rear discharge mower this spring from my Howse dealer.
If you didn't want to buy a new mower, I might try the idea from 8N from MN had with limiting the discharge on your mower.

while I ain't no certified tree hugger..anyone who would waste that many squirrel homes.....Hmmm...lotta good squirrell muddles flying around the tops of them oaks..matter of fact, imho...it should be a hangin' offense to cut oaks down...For the leaves, cut them with a closed discharge mower, get a three point rake, rake them up, then sell (or give to good friends) the mulch !!! Make lemonade outta lemons..or if you wanna grow 'taters or carrots..make the bed out of alternating layers of oak leaf mulch and dirt..them spuds and orange roots will love it...

Red oaks can do wonderful things. If you are into wood fuel for fire, red oak is the easiest to split of all oak I know. When I was younger, I kept several fireplaces and kitchen stove burning with mostly red oak and only a heavy axe to split it with. I love red oak. All trees make a mess with leaves. You should see my Magnolia in the front yard. I use the 8N with the Bermuda grass scratcher to drag the yard clean. Don't forget the shade in summer. It gets hot here. Good luck.

I have to agree a finish mower does a good job of mulching leaves. And if this doesn't appeal to your liking you can always get a 3 point yard rake for your 8n and save ware and tare on your back and arms. John

You may want to fashion up a device to limit the discharge from the mower. If the leaves spend more time under the mower, the more they will get chopped up. That's really how these "recycler" mowing decks work, they simply limit the discharge. I was able to use some heavier sheet metal and bent it to fit and cover up the discharge opening. I then drilled four holes through the sheet metal and mowing deck and used some 1/4" bolts to hold it in place. Put it on when the leaves start to fall and take it off when your done mulching.

I'm with Ed. My 6' King Kutter does a good job of chopping up the leaves. It works the best if they are dry. I also mow in a circle directing the leaves towards the center so I can go over them several times.

I have a 5' king kutter finish mower that does a good job mulching our oak leaves. Between the three blades it gets the job done.

It would also seem that the four wheels on my finish mower would tread a little lighter around the Oak's roots than the bush hog would.
