Just got my latest issue of Mother Earth News in the mail today...personally I think the publication has been going down-hill the past several years...anyhow...I was was thrilled to see the title:

"Choose the Best Tractor" on the cover. The cover photo even has a lovely lady standing next to a good looking 1949 International M!

So, I am thinking that this is going to be a article on the value of purchasing quality tractors that can run for 50 years, that are still affordable today, that can be repaired by an average man, and provide lots of utility for a a country property!

WRONG. The article is all about new stuff and here are some of the catagories:

riding mower 8-10hp $800-2,000
lawn tractor 10-16hp $900-3,100
garden tractor 14-25hp $2,500-7,000
estate tractor 15-30hp $9,000-20,000

So, being that my 8N has about 23hp does that make it an estate tractor?

What a let down...great old tractor on the front and a bunch of fancy stuff in the article.

Not what I expected and I don't think the article really does much for anybody except the yuppies.

I stopped my Mother Earth subscription years ago.. They started using the magazine more for their own political platform and less for practical applications for life on the homestead. I guess my opinions and theirs differ on a lot of subjects.

Since they listed the Garden Tractor in the 14 - 25 HP, why can't it be that? Look, there is no best.....Period... Everybody has their bias as to what is best.... What is best is what you think will suit your purposes and at what price. Happy Motoring

I agree - These folks don't know what they are missing. An ad has been running in our local paper for The "green" lawn tractor outfit. One of the models is over $8300. Yikes! For that amount you could have a couple of N's, one for show and one to work. Tom from upstate but downstate from Sal.
