Installing headlights

My 1948 8N has never had headlights. I feel that there is a round disc behind the panel where the knockout would allow this. However, can I install the wings even though there is only l knockout on each panel. Does the 1948 originally call for the round adapter rather than the wings under the headlights?

Thank you.

My 8N did have lights at one time but are now gone. My question is how is the wiring routed?

The original 1948 hood side panels(or doglegs) would have had two knockouts for headlight installation. The two knockouts continued until at roughly into the 1951 production. Headlights with wings were a popular item and many people chose to install them well after the round mounts came out about 1950. Dealers would sell headlights with or without wings, I remember a few owners that wanted them on their new NAA's.

No one has mentioned the sheetmetal brackets that I've seen and have on 3 tractors. I've heard that it is a Canadian version of a dealer installed light option. Anyone know about them?

You mean like the one in the painting on the bottom of my web page? The painting is of a Canadian 8N and has headlight brackets unlike any I have seen around Minnesota. I have a large print of that painting and one other by the same artist.

Hi Paul. Sorry about the late response. Those brackets are exactly like the ones that I have. Your note and picture seems to support my belief that the brackets are of Canadian origin. I like your choice of artist and the quality of her work.

Roger..... ..many think the headlight "wings" are neater than the cups of the later 8N dealer installed headlights. I'd use wings for looks and strength. And I wouldn't care what the purests say..... .....Dell

Dell,
You seem to imply that some headlights were factory installed with the "wings" and that dealer installed lights used the round cups. Am I reading you right? I've never heard one way or the other...just curious.

Thanks,
Don

Don..... ..ALL headlights on N-Tractors were/are Dealer/Owner installed options. NEVER factory N-headlights, wings or cups or brackets or..... ..Dell, who sez all headlights need extra metal to spread the load so the sheetmetal doglegs don't breakthru from metal fatigue.
