Add STP to trans oil to prevent hydralic (leak-down)

My 8N HYDRALIC LIFT is losing its zip. I suspect that "ram-piston blow-by" is the problem. Would it be proper to add "STP" to the transmission oil as a "temperary fix".

A prospective buyer has shown interest in this 8N. Should the "buyer" be informed?

THANKS

I doubt the STP would help. At least if you're running gear lube already I don't think it would. It works first as a thickener, which gear oil already is. It also works as a seal sweller, which the N doesn't have, unless you've got the o-ring piston in the ram.

Personally, I'd tell the seller, as well as explaining that it's really no big deal as a problem, and usually easily fixable if they so desire.

I would probably fix or tell the buyer about the problem, just for the simple reason..What comes around goes around.I'm not saying this guy will come back and go nuts on you or anything. But some day you will more than likely buy a used product, and you would like them to tell you what your getting
in turn for your hard earned money.Plus your a N owner. From my knowledge all the N owners on the board seem to be good people and they are OK in my book. Please don't think I'm calling you dishonest
because I'm not.Just my $.2 worth.Good luck Bish.

Why not fix the problem? Probably bad ring (s) on the lift piston. Not a big job and not expensive. Steve 8N 169302

This sounds like one of those old mechanic's tales...

And here is another. My first exposure to an N-series tractor was my brother's 9N with a dearborn loader. The cylenders leaked badly and sometimes it would take several cycles up and down to get the seals to seat again. An old welder I talked to said add brake fluid to the hydraulic fluid, and that would swell the seals up. I added, and it did, but everybody I told about it afterward said I had done the worst thing possible to the hydraulic system by adding the brake fluid (even though brakes are hydraulic, aren't they?).

Shortly after adding the brake fluid, though, my brother sold his tractor, so I never saw if the quick fix was good or bad, or long-lasting for that mater. This past year I finally bought a 2N of my own. The 3 point hitch holds well, but when left several hours, the lift goes down. Accordingly, I am interested to see if your STP proposal meets with aproval from readers of this board.

By the way, to reader's of this message, I don't recomend adding anything, brake fluid especially, to any part of your tractor, that isn't specifically called for by the manufacturer.

Good Luck

Yes, once the seals for the rear axel are gone, the brakes are hydraulic.
You then have to replace both seals and brakes

If you have 80w-90w in the tranny/hydraulics, the STP won't ammount to hill of beans.
If it is leaking down quickly with the Ford recommended M2C134D Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid, then drain it and try the 80w-90w or straight 90w if you can find it...
