Aftering using my 1949 8N and I notice the gas cap is hissing air until I losen the gas cap. I assume the gas tank vent must be plugged, but where is it? I don't want to take the hood off to find it unless I have to. The pressure is such that you can here the cap hissing. Don't want the tank to implode.

The cobbled together 8N that I recently reconditioned had what I considered a good idea on the tank vent. The old man who had it before me had pasted a double layer of screen wire overthe vent hole with liquid solder so that a small bug could not gain entry to plug the hole. Around this part of Alabama we have what we call the dirt dobber and that little varmint will plug any and every hole they can find with a mud nest. Beautifully built thing but hard on things with holes in them. Any place that is in the dry will have rows on rows of their nests of mud in rows in every crack they can find. The like holes and any place that has a corner to build in. They have caused the forced landing of many an airplane when the tank vent was plugged. Some in only a couple of hours on the ground.

FNH had a free replacement program for the old style caps with a vented style because of the plugged vents. I don't know if they will still honor that but it would not hurt to ask. As a coincidence, last week I found two of the original exchange cards that were used for that program. I may have to exchange some more.

This subject has come up before and Tyler had a very good response relative to safety that you might want to consider. That gas cap is real close to your battery, ballast resistor and other electrical components. If you were to use a vented cap, that could allow gasoline vapor or possibly fluid (full tank going up hill) to get dangerously close to those ignition sources. I'm not sure I would take that chance with my safety or with my 8 iron. Ol' Henry and his design team took a lot into consideration when they designed this wonderful machine. Even though it would be easier to use a vented gas cap, for safety sake and peace of mind you may want to take the time to clean out that vent hole in the top of the tank and stick with your original cap. That way you can get better acquainted with what's under the hood.

The hood and tank are not really that difficult to remove, just akward.Did mine myself in about 20/30 min.after draining fuel. The trick I used to clear the vent holes in the top of the tank was first to clean the outer hole, then squirted some Marvel Mystery Oil in the hole into the inside of the dome(about an 1/2 ounce or so)and let it sit over nite.Next morning I pressed the rubber tip of my air nozzle against the outer hole and it eventually blew right thru.A lot of crud from inside the dome came out with the oil.Put the cap back on,plug the fuel outlet, and repeat the air nozzle thing and if the tank pressures up good and quick it all worked.Good time to clean the tank out, too.

Thanks for the info. and suggestions. I'll look for a vented gas cap untill I'm motivated to take the hood off.

I drilled a tiny hole in the gas cap. Don't know how smart it was, but haven't had any problems....

It sounds like a vented gas cap would solve the problem.

The vent is a very small hole located in a softball-sized dome on top of the gas tank. There is another small hole under the dome, but you can't get to it, 'cause the dome is welded to the tank. Anyway, ya gotta remove the hood to get to it.
