8N pretty much covered everything. You should know, if you don't already, that when you open the gas shut off, just turn it 2 full turns. This allows one gallon to remain in the tank, when you think you ran out of gas. Then at this point turn it all the way open and you can use the 1 gal. remaining in the tank to get back to the barn for more gas. Water in the tank is not unusual. AT this point I would completely drain the tank, take off the carb bowl and clean it out, take off the glass bowl at the shut off, clean it and the screen just above the bowl and put everything back together. This should solve the problem, but do like 8N said, add a can of conditioner when you refill the gas tank. Good Luck. I've been where you are now. Have fun.

Wouldn't surprise me at all to find a gallon of water or other corruption in the bottom of a fifty year old gas tank. Pull a line and drain whatever is in there. I would also shoot the works and put a half a bottle of Heet or some other gas line antifreeze in with the new gas. It is also within the realm of possibilities that your reserve setting on the shut off isn't opening. While you have it drained might be worth pulling the shut off and cleaning up the strainer as well.

Your mileage may vary
