I started what I thought would be a simple job of cleaning and re-packing both front wheel bearings sets. Lot of grease around the seal so didn't pay particular attention to the fit. Bought a couple of inner seals from the Ford man (ouch). After cleaning everything up I tried the seal in the hub. sloppy fit. Went and dug the old one out of the trash and cleaned it up a bit and tried it. Same way. Very loose. Curious now. I placed the new seal and unpacked clean bearing in the hub and slid it on the spindle. When pushed as far as it will go there is almost a 3/16" gap and you can move the seal around with your knife tip. Suggestions please.

I noticed that the new seals I bought had an I.D. larger than the spindle. I was told that the seal worked by sealing the back of the spindle(axle). O.D. of seal should be press fit inside hub. These seals were 1/2" thick unlike common lip seals.

Kenneth Where did you find the 1/2" thick seals. That sounds like what I need. I bought a front wheel kit with bearings, races and seal but the seal is wrong. The Ford tractor dealer was absolutely no help this morning. I did look at a couple of N's he had and they don't have this gap between the hub and spindle.
Thanks for the reply.

Ron,just finished both of the front wheels. You can buy a kit from alot of suppliers for around $23.00.This includes (bearings, cups, and seal. You might as well check the thrust bearing while you have it tore down.I put all of the parts in a 5 gal.bucket with a gal.of min.spirts and let them soak for a day then got in there with a brush and cleaned them down to bear metal.Check around on this board for suppliers.Good luck.Larrys8n

I did purchase a front wheel kit but this seal is wrong. Fits loose in hub but that may be because the hub is 60 years old. Still have the gap between the back of the hub and the spindle. Kenneth's reply indicated a 1/2" thick seal which may be the ticket. I'm wondering if maybe somewhere in this tractors history someone has swapped out some front end parts. Trying to hold off on the spindle bushings until I figure out what flavor of Studebaker this thing is.
Thanks for the reply.
