Duo-grip, ladder, or double-ring?

I can't predict what kind of work I will need chains for, so how do I know what kind of chains to buy?

I have 11.2-28 ag tires with weight in them (dunno if antifreeze or CaCl) on my 8N. I plan to blade my driveway, haul firewood, and, er, play. But I'd also like to feel confident I could pull a car out of the ditch if necessary.

Also, how badly do chains tear up grass?

A few weeks ago a fella from Sweden posted a reply to a similar question on the Ford board. He included a link to a Swedish tire chain company. Those are SERIOUS chains. When you get there you need to click on "sno/slirskyyd" then "OFA slirskyyd for lantbruk". Just surf around that site and you'll see what I mean.

Now if I could just read Swedish.
Oh...and figure the conversion rate to dollars.
Those are some impressive chains...

I have chains on the 8N and they work great in the snow. They don't seem to tear up the turf (frozen or not). I have gotten stuck in deep snow with them, not fun.

I've got an 8N with filled rear tires. I got the double-ring chains at the beginning of last winter and left them on for the winter. Once they were on and set up they were fine on ice, in snow, and seemed just fine in the mud too. They didn't do too much damage to frozen turf if you were just travelling across it.

My only complaint: When I first got them I frigged with them forever trying to even them out so that I didn't have a huge gap in coverage. Eventually I took a photo of my tractor with the chains on showing the gap to the dealer and said, "Well, what about it?" They started to say that gap was normal, but I but I didn't really like it - I expect a lot of ice in my part of New Hampshire and wanted to reduce spinning as much as possible. They ended up agreeing with me and gave me a free cross-chain to add to each tire. I talked to them later about it and I think they had to eat the cost of the cross-chains as the chain distributor wouldn't compensate them.

Rob, I've got the duo-grips from tirechain.com. They work great in snow or mud (I've also got filled rear tires). I haven't gotten stuck yet (but probably will this winter since I said that...grin). They tear up everything, especially lawn. I only put them on when I really have to.

Hope this helps..... ..... .....Ed

Chains tear up every thing! Grass, tires, driver.

I have a set that I have used 5 times in 17 years and I hate to put them on!

I have chains on my 8N, calcium in the tires and weight on the back. I plow my road and a few driveways and I have never gotten stuck. I leave the chains on all the time, just have to stay away from the grass.
