I bought a 1944 2N tractor that had been restored and they have put a 12 volt system on it. The problem is the alternator will not charge unless you take the black wire and touch a connection on the alternator then release it. After this it charges great. I was told to not leave the connection on but just to touch it (it basically puts both wires on the same terminal when touched) Thanks in advance for any help.

2N44, I'm no rocket scientist, but here is what I did. Wire from hot side of terminal board, "when the key is on" to a push button on dash, "$2.00 button" then from button run wire through wire harnes to alternator. As you look at the alternator from the back, connect to the male spade thats on top on the left. Now when you start the tractor, just touch the button and alternator should start working. I used number 14 wire. Seems to work OK..... Claus; I can hear ya now, another half-$$- job, but it works.

Sure it works but it's probably easier (and cheaper) to use a diode, resistor or lamp to do it the right way.

Another half_$$_d conversion. He touches pin 1, (The field excitation terminal) to pin 2 or the output terminal to start excitation of the Altenator. This cannot be left on since isolation of this terminal is needed once it starts running.
The proper way to wire it, is to run a wire to the coil side of the ignition switch. This wire must have a resistor, lamp or diode in the line to prevent the tractor from running after the key is turned off. Check the diagram below..
Happy Motoring
