I decided tonight to fix the leaky rear seals on my 48 8N. when I went to remove the axel nut I noticed that someone had drilled and tapped the nuts and installed set screws through the nut to the axel shaft. I removed the set screws and the nuts only to find that of the original 1 and 1/4 inch of thread there is only about 3/4 inch left on one axel and about 1/2 inch left on the other. The rest of the thread on the outer end of the shaft is stripped. Is there a way to fix these axels other than replacing them? Also I noticed that the splines on the hub where it slides on the axel seems loose. There is about 1/8 inch of movement between the hub splines and the axel splines . Is this normal or do I need new hubs? Thanks in advance.

Ole

Ole..... ...unfortunately, thats what you're going to have to do, replace both the axles and the hubs. Fortunately, they are still available, only semi-pricey $$$.

The I&T FO-4 manual has the complete proceedure.

Uh... setscrews huh? I worked one where the nut was actually arc welded onto the axle. Boy, you're lucky..... .....Dell

If the axle and hub are both shot why not JB Weld or Cat epoxy them together and buy new axles and hubs in about 20 years the next time it needs seals?

Gary..... ...the 450 ft/lbs on the big axle nut also controls bearing clearance. But that is an interesting observation..... .....Dell

Look again. The nuts hold the hubs on but have nothing whatsoever to do with the bearing clearances.

without the big nut on the end of the axle shaft, you COULD NOT detect or measure axle shaft end play. "If any motion can be detected, bearings are adjusted too loosely" per I&T FO-4. Axle bearings are adjusted by shims. ..... ...respectfully, Dell

Shims set the axle bearing clearance against the retainers on each end. Hubs and nuts have nothing to do with it. Clearance can be set AND checked without installing the hubs.

I got the idea from a friend with a big OTR truck with a loose crankshaft pulley/vibration dampner. I think it was a Detroit desel. The crank and pulley were both shot from running loose. He glued it on with Catipiller brand epoxy and it seemed to hold.

I wouldn't trust the cement for a life-safety item like keeping the wheel on without the nut or some other method of mechanical fastening but it would sure take the slack out.

Thanks Dell. Thats what I thought, but I was wishing for a miracle cure. Time to get out the checkbook.
