I thought I would install my new thermostat & upper hose today. It's very difficult to get the thermostat into the hose more than 1/3 of the way. Thought about useing Vasoline lightly inside the hose.Is that a bad idea? What would you suggest?

The hot water trick worked just fine. Thanks to everyone except Backdoor Farmer for their help.

Hi Arthur,

In addition to what's already been suggested, silicone is a safe lube for rubber. Silicone lubes often contain solvent thinners, which could be bad for rubber. But since these solvents evaporate quickly its not an issue. Good luck...Al English

P.S. Maybe that "Backdoor farmer" guy that posted above would have some suggestions. I'm guessing he would be an authority on lubricants

The hot water method Mike suggested should work just fine. If in the future you need grease for installing hoses, tires or other rubber products grab some vegetable based product such as Crisco from the kitchen, its the best thing to use. Petroleum products can cause rubber to deteriorate.

Try putting the hose in some hot water. I did that for the 8N I was working on and it softened the rubber up enough to slide the thermostat to the right place. made it easy to slide on the radiator and the inlet pipe, too.
