Does anyone have any tips for driving in the sure-seals on the rear axles of a 9n/2n? I've driven in literally hundreds of seals over the years by carefully centering them and tapping them in radially, but these are by far the worst for staying put when you tap on them. Tap on one side and the other just pops back up--What gives? Is there a sure-fire technique for this awkward task? I gotta get out there and start plowing soon, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Maddening, aren't they?

As said, a bevel or lead-in gorund on the edge will help. Also, check the surafce where they seat -any nicks or burrs here will really screw you up.

I used to fight these until my brother-in-law showed up one day with a length of heavy-duty cardboard tube - carpet-roll core. A perfect fit. Put a block of 6x on top of it, get all centered just right and then a stout tap on top and in they go.

I thought they wouldn't go until I found a piece of pipe that was just the right diameter and a hammer and on they went.

put them in your freezer for a couple hours or set them on a block of dry ice for awhile. they will go in just takes a little persuasion and hold your mouth right.

I put mine in about 4 or 5 years ago and I feel your pain. I remember I had to grind a knife edge around them and they popped in. I also remember someone telling me the new ones had a bevel, but I never saw them. Try grinding a short bevel to guide them in.

Ya, these versions of the seals have a bevel, but I guess I'll take your advice and fire up the grinder to provide a little more persuasion. That big ol' axle sticking out of there doesn't help much either.

I just finished installing sure seals on my 9N today - the second 9N I've done this on. I use a piece of 1x4 lumber about 6 inches long and a 3 pound sledge hammer to persuade the seals. The 1x4 is thin enough to fit inside the studs and over the outside edge of the seal and is less likely than a metal pipe to cause damage to the new seal. The sledge allows for slow , controlled heavy wallops on the top of the board without rebound. The essential key is to be sure the seal is not tilted - it must be sitting flat before you begin to persuade it with the stick and hammer. If it is not lying flat to begin with it will never go in. A couple of thumps on one side, then the other side, then back and forth around the seal. A little bit at a time - keep it as flat as you can - it will go. Good luck.
