9N will not start. My wife and I replaced the battery (6V) however the engine just won't catch. Starter appears to be doing its job and gas is getting to the carburator. Any suggestions... help... we've only driven the tractor twice.

Would like to thank Mike C, Darrel, Bob/ont, and don t for there assistance with "9N/loader - position control help??" Great help.

Blessed to have the N board. Thank you again - Rob

Rob..... ....there a number of causes for "won't start". But can be condensed to usually fuel or sparkie problem.

My first check, would be to spray some ether "quick start" into the carb throat. (take the carb breather hose off) If it will catch on ether, you've got a fuel problem. If it won't start on ether, you've got an ignition problem.

Since you're a new N-Owner, a review of Ford's starting procedure might be in order. Hand throttle about 1/4-1/3.
Tranny shifter in neutral.
Ignition key on. Push the starter button.
THEN a quick pull on the choke.

Hope this helps, and if you're still not starting, you can post a more detailed description of your problem and we can get you started..... ....Dell

Did it run and stop, or did it just not start one day? When you tried to start it, did you flood it? I remember reading one of Dell's postings about unleaded fuel fouling up spark plugs when flooded. Since it ran before, I would consider replacing the spark plugs since you may have flooded it. Make sure that the spark you are getting is big and blue, not wimpy yellow. You said that you are getting gas to the carb-how do you know? There is a small screen in the elbow at the carb, and if that is plugged it may appear that you have fuel to the carb, but you really don't if you took the line off at the elbow. Post back with some additional information and we will be happy to help you get it running. And I agree, this board is a blessing to have. There is nothing better that friends helping friends.

Mr. Miller,

"bg" has the correct idea - but I'd go one further since we don't know the plugs' condition. Remove one of the plugs, re-attach the cable and allow it to lie on the manifold. Crank the engine (Key on/neutral naturally) and check for a good strong spark at the plug itself.

If the strength of the spark (or none) is questionable then that would indicate the examination of the points and condenser would be in order- and as a last resort the coil.

In addition, if there is no spark at all - check the ballast resistor for continuity.

Regards.

You need to check and see if you have spark. Remove one of the spark plug wires and insert a small screwdriver into the end of the wire. Ground it about 1/16-1/8" from the block as you crank the tractor and see if a spark jumps the gap. If you have spark, shoot a little starting fluid into the carb and see if it will start. If it does, then dies out, you have a fuel problem.

Every thing you've read up to this point is correct. At times my 40 9N acts just like yours.Appears everything is in working order, but it still won't start. It could be that you carberator float is stuck in the closed position. I often just give the carb a tap or two with a wrech and the way it goes. Sometimes I have to tap the carb and then take off the air intake and put my hand over it to realy choke it off and the way it goes. Just be careful you don't choke it so much as to flood it. Also give it a squirt of starter fluid at this point. Good luck
