Hey R.M. I agree with MikeC. Deleting cookies is more of a security task than an efficiency task. If you don't have a firewall program (Zone Alarm or Black Ice), then you have no control over what web sites are writing to your hard drive in the form of cookies. Most cookies are good things, as they can store log-on info to allow you access to certain sites in a faster manner.

If you've had your system for a while, and installed new programs and deleted files, then it may be time to degrag your hard drive. Windows includes a program called Disk Defragmenter that does this for you. Click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter to run it. It will tell you how fragmented the files on your hard drive are and recommend whether it should be run or not. You can also set this up to be done automatically for you via the Windows Task Scheduler. It's a good thing that should be done on every PC periodically and can make a significant improvement in how fast files load and your system processes data.

Caveat - I have years of experience with Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95, 98 and 2000, but have never seen ME, so some of these references may be named a little differently. Defrag (aka Speed Disk by Norton) has been around forever, so I'm assuming here that ole Uncle Bill also included them in ME.

Good luck with it..... ..Ed

Cookies really have no impact on the speed of your computer. If anything, they will speed up logging into sites such as Amazon.com or others that identify you personally. If you want to speed it up slightly, defragging the hard drive and clearing out the Internet Explorer temp files will do more that clearing out cookies will.

Not tryin to start a fight, but cookies certainly can cause a slowdown.

I agree that, normally, the 'regular' cookies like Amazon and Yahoo etc won't, but there are others that are known as 'SpyWare' that 'phone home' and tell some sites your sufing habits. These include but are not limited to Aureate and FlySwat cookie technologies.

Y'all may want to log some time at www.grc.com and read up on spyware. Then go to the LavaSoft link below and download a small free program called AdAware and use it once a week or so.
It will search your hard drive for any known or suspected SpyWare elements and then give you the option to delete them or not.

You may be very surprised what you find...

Uh, cookies alone do not allow spyware to work. You have to have a program that tracks your movements and phones home. A good quality firewall will prevent it from working. Also, take Steve Gibson's site with a grain of salt. The guy seems to have a serious paranoia problem.

Hi Mike. I don't think ole Steve is paranoid, I just think he's making a ton of money on this latest of many gigs in the I.T. profession. He's done some really cool stuff in the past. For example, he was the inventor of the first light pen for personal computers, used on the old Apple ][ computers in the late 70's/early 80's, but really didn't make anything off of them. I think he's making some good buckos now, and is maybe trying to make up for the ventures that he didn't score as big on.

Regards..... ..... Ed
