Throttle position when starting?

Finally got a chance to take the 8n for a spin over the easter weekend. Kinda new to this 8n stuff and tractor has been parked outside, under cover since November, 2001.

Put in a fully charged battery, opened the fuel tank valve and after a few cranks, the engine came to life. Engine ran for about 2-3 minutes at middle to low rpms and then died and would not re-start. Didn't have time to check things out because kids had to get to the easter egg hunt.

Anyway, came back to the tractor about 4 hours later and would not start. Tried pull-starting, but then didn't work either. Checked the sparkies. Sparkies sparked nice & blue, but were dry without any fuel. Took off air cleaner tube by carb and held hand over carb throat - plenty of suction while trying to start. Sprayed starting fluid into carb, but still no start.

Sprayed some starting fluid into just cylinder #3 and engine then started. Let her warm up about 5 minutes and took her for a little spin for another 5 minutes. Engine was running like a top. Stopped and shut off. The only throttle position this tractor will start in is complete idle.

So, do all 8ns behave this way? Should the tractor start in other throttle positions? What about other carb settings? Choke works, but didn't seem to put enough fuel into cylinders. Didn't think manifold problem because of suction at carb throat.

I have two 8Ns -- a '51 and a '52. One starts best with the throttle at idle, the other requires about one-third to one-half throttle. One likes a lot of choke, the other no choke. I just had to get used to what each beast demands.

The best throttle setting on my 2N changes slightly whenever I adjust the carb. The most frequent(and setting I'm using now) is up 1/4 to 1/3 from idle. After the first crank, I hold the choke until it coughs, which is usually the second crank, then release immediately. Total choking time, between 1 and 2 seconds. I stand ready to choke briefly should it start to sputter, which usually only happens when it's pretty cold out. Bottom line is, find what works best for your tractor's current state of tune, and try to do it that way EVERY time.

Your throttle controls the governor and your governor and engine speed control your carburetor. Even with your throttle at low idle with the engine cranking your carburetor will be wide open or close to it. Sounds like you may have your float level on the low side. It doesn't sound like it wants to flood so give it some choke when starting. I start my cold 2N with the throttle set low and hold the choke out until it catches and immediately push it in. If it is quite cold and the engine goes ragged when first started I may momentarily pull the choke and immediately release it until it smooths out. 1-2 minutes. They are all somewhat different, you have to learn how to live with them, because, living without them is much worse.

I start my newly rebuilt 48 8N (12 volts) with the throttle at the lowest point. In warm weather, it will fire on the first or second revolution with no choke. In the winter, I pull choke all the way out. As soon as it hits, I push the choke in.

That's my story and I'm stick'n with it!

My 2N likes it in the first quarter of the throttle position guide. When warm, I believe the original maual recomends pulling the choke and releasing quickly. The N series have an updraft carb prone to flooding.

Of course your carb may need adjustment - a good investment is an I&T F0-4 repair manual. It explains carb adjustment.

Ed - Thanks for your thoughts. I did follow the I & T manual for carb adjustment. Once running, the engine runs and performs fine. Just hard to start. When I brought the tractor home, the float was stuck open and if the gas valve was left on, the gas would run out of carb. Upon seeing this, I removed the carb and installed a carb kit. Do you have any other thoughts why mine seems hard to start? When you say you release the choke quickly, do you keep the choke pulled out until the tractor fires and runs or do you start cranking the motor and pull and release the choke before it fires?

if it is cold, pull and hold (hey - that is a catchy choke rule of thumb rhyme)

however, if it is warm, just a quick pull and release on the choke right as it starts cranking

8N,
I always bump mine up a couple of notches above idle when starting. Don't have a good reason for it, but it always fires right off. When it's cold, I just pull the choke out all the way, then let go of it right after it turns over.

You may have a fuel flow problem at the screens or the jets. JMO.

My 2N will start best in the full idle position also. Whatever works....
